Local Golf Report: A winning weekend of local golf

From Tee to Green

Last week was a big one on the local golf scene, with two of the biggest tournaments on the calendar being played in the span of 24 hours.

Last Saturday at Beaver Creek Golf Course, the annual MSU-Northern Diesel Technology Scramble was held with the winning score of 9-under par posted. The tournament was held as a fundraiser for the Diesel Tech program at Northern, and it featured a full card of four-person scramble teams.

Sunday, the action moved to Prairie Farms Golf Course, where the annual Rotary Blast tourney was played. The tournament is a two-person, modified stableford scoring tourney, where points are awarded for double bogeys, bogeys, pars, birdies and eagles, and when the points are tallied, they go against a players about of points they have to make up based on their handicap.

In the end, the team of Chad Edgar and Eric Wilting not only won their flight, but also had the top overall score in the tournament with 23.5 points. That’s a great score in this format, so job well done, boys.

Jim Kato and Greg Baltrusch won the first flight with 15.5 points, and were second overall, while Doug and Dave Sheppard also got to 15 points, for third overall. Other flight winners included Nate Baltrusch and Greg Mosness with 13 points and Frank Peterson and Ric Floren with 10.5 points.

There are still some big tourneys left this summer, including the NMH Foundation Tournament at Prairie Farms, the Joel Rosette Memorial at BCGC, and club championships at both courses.

Last week also saw golf leagues return to action after the Fourth of July break.

In men’s league at Prairie Farms last Tuesday night, Myers Ranch earned high team with 21 points. Barry Kato, Mason Sheppard, Rob Myers and Jake Myers composed the squad. Kyle Sheppard was low gross with a 37, while Brett Patrick was low net at 30.5. Last Wednesday night saw DA Davidson take high team with 21 points. The team was made up of Jim Wirt, Frank Peterson, Barry Zanto and Dave Greenwood. Doug Sheppard was low gross with a 38, while Frank Peterson was low net at 31.

In ladies league last Thursday, DA Davidson had high-team honors with 23.5 points. The team was composed of Paula Sheppard, Mel Zuidema, Teagan Fee and Shari Baltrusch. Lorrie Keller was low gross with a 43, while Paula Sheppard was low net with a 33.

At BCGC last Thursday night in men’s league, New Concept Lawn Care was high team with 26 points. Nick Turner, Justin Hawley, Shane Patacsil and Bobby Bergren composed the squad. Patacsil and Kyle Miller shared low gross, each shooting 38, while Rob Pitkanen was low net with a 29.5.

Speaking of the Fourth of July, that week saw our own Kyle Sheppard play extremely well in the annual Whitefish Fourth of July Tournament. Sheppard won the second flight with rounds of 75-78-77. It was a great tee days of golf by Kyle because, as anyone who has played that tourney will tell you, it’s not easy. Whitefish’ 36-hole layout is as tough as it gets in Montana any time of the year, but the way its set up for that tournament, it plays very difficult., so congrats Kyle., great playing.

Lastly, it’s Open Championship Week. I just had to mention that because, I won’t be getting any sleep. I am one of those guys who stays up and watches from the first tee shot to the last, which means, pretty much all night and into the next day. And that’s going to be rough on me because I just got back from Vegas, and if you do Vegas right, you don’t get a whole lot of sleep there either, which we did. So. Here’s to not sleeping for yet another week — but — The Open is as good a reason as any to miss out on sleep.
