Former Chester-Joplin-Inverness star inks with Lights basketball
Cory Richter did a lot with his athletic career at Chester-Joplin-Inverness. And his family name, well, it's synonymous with Hi-Line sports.
Now, Richter will be back on the Hi-Line playing one of the three sports he was so good at while he was a CJI Hawk.
Earlier this week, Montana State University-Northern head men's basketball coach Shawn Huse announced that Richter has signed an NAIA national letter of intent to play hoops for the Lights starting in the fall.
Basketball was one of three sports Richter stood out at CJI. With the Hawks, he was a four-year starter, a two-time All-Northern C selection, a three-time District 9C performer, and a Class C All-State standout in 20117-18.
During his senior year, Richter led averaged 21.3 points, seven rebounds and two assists per game, and also helped CJI to the Northern C tournament in two different seasons.
Richter also stood out at CJI on the football field and the track. In football, Richter played a host of positions for the Hawks in his four-year career, ands he earned all Northern C honors twice, while playing offense and defense for head coach Jim Vinson. He also earned all 9C honors on the track three different times at CJI.
After two years of going to college at Montana Tech, Richter decided to come home and renew his love for the game of basketball, and Huse was happy to have him.
"I always felt like Cory was one that maybe slipped through the cracks. He is very good athlete with extremely high character and is an outstanding student," Huse said. "He expressed interest in attending Northern next year so we felt this would be a great fit. With our main spots being already filled at this point and with several upperclassmen returning at the guard spots, we both felt this would be a great opportunity to redshirt, feel things out, work on his game, get back into the rhythm of being on a team, and acclimate to the college game. He is a great shooter, has outstanding work ethic, can jump with the best of them and has excellent size and strength for a college guard. I am tickled to have him on board as I feel like he will fit in great with our group and enhance everything we are about both on and off the floor."
Richter is the third member of Huse' 2019 recruiting class, joining junior college transfers Gio Jackson and David Harris.
