Horace grew up on a farm during the depression years, as the middle child of seven. After serving in the U.S. Army during WWII, he returned to Valley City and met his future wife, Jeanette Collins, at Valley City State Teachers' College. They married September 2, 1951.
A science teacher his entire professional life, Horace taught in Parshall, ND, Bottineau, ND, and Glendive, MT, before moving to Havre in 1959 to teach biological sciences at Northern Montana College. He earned a master's degree from the University of Colorado and his Ph.D. from Montana State University. He remained at NMC for 29 years, teaching biology, physical and earth sciences. For the last 15 years there, he taught anatomy and physiology for the nursing program.
He was a member at First Lutheran Church where he taught the Bethel Bible Series, served on several boards and committees and as congregational president. He was the chairman of the Men's Fellowship club for many years and served five years as the co-chairman of the lutefisk dinner.
His hobbies included camping, fishing, woodworking, gardening, reading, ornithology, and Soduko puzzles. He was also a member of Kiwanis and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
His greatest pleasures were spending time with his three children and their families, watching his 10 grandchildren grow and mature into adulthood. He would often travel to New Mexico, Minnesota and Washington to attend concerts, games, plays, recitals, graduations, confirmations, baptisms and weddings. He was so proud of all of them.
Horace was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette; parents, Otto and Miriam; brothers Warren, Allen and David, and sister, Eleanor.
