A single-vehicle car crash on Mission Canyon Road one mile south of Hays Saturday killed one man and sent two other men to Fort Belknap Indian Health Services for treatment of injuries.
Blaine County Sheriff and Coroner John Colby said that Jordan Shambo of Hays, 21, died at the scene of the crash.
The Montana Highway Patrol crash narrative said the crash happened sometime between 6 and 7 a.m. Saturday.
Alcohol and speed are suspected as factors in the crash.
Highway Patrol said that the vehicle, a Chevy K-2500, driven by a 21-year-old male from Parshall, North Dakota, was traveling west bound on Mission Canyon Road.
The vehicle failed to negotiate a series of curves in the road and lost control. It slid, driver’s side down, into the soft gravel, tipped and overturned into the nearby creek. The front passenger, Shambo, received fatal injuries and died at the scene, and the driver and a second passenger, a 20-year-old male of Hays, were taken to Indian Health Service.
The gravel road was dry and no one in the vehicle were wearing seat belts, it added.
“It appeared speed, alcohol and not wearing a seatbelt were factors in the crash,” the narrative said.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Fort Belknap Police Department are assisting in the ongoing Montana Highway Patrol investigation.
