Local Golf Report: Tournament season starts Saturday

From Tee to Green

This weekend marks the start of June and, with it, golf tournament season.

On the slate this weekend are two important tournaments, both of which are always popular on the local golf scene.

Saturday at Prairie Farms Golf Course, the annual Golfing for a Cure tourney will take place, and, the 18-hole scramble is not only one of the best golf tourneys for a cause each summer, but it has some exciting new changes, as well.

The major change to the tournament this year is, there will be no more men being auctioned off to be part of what was a three-woman team. Now, there will be two men and two women per team, and, there are a full 24 teams set to participate Saturday.

And while there are some changes to the format, the mission of the tournament remains the same.

In an effort to raise funds to fight cancer across the Hi-Line, the Havre Women's Golf Association hosts the annual tournament each year. The tournament has raised $30,000 in the last two years to help people fight cancer in Havre and on the Hi-Line.

Once again, the tournament will be Saturday at Prairie Farms. After the tournament ends around 5:30, there will be a live band by Blind Luck for anyone who wants to come out to enjoy, and the tournament organizers some changes made still are selling raffle tickets for a Las Vegas trip - need not be present to win - and there will be several drawings for prizes and a few live auctions.

On the other side of Havre, another big fundraiser tournament will be going on at the same time Saturday afternoon. Beaver Creek Golf Course will host the annual Havre Wrestling Golf Tournament. The event is an 18-hole, 4-person scramble, and funds raised go to help Havre Wrestling in various ways. The tournament kicks off Saturday morning at BCGC, with plenty of fun events planned for the day.

The tourney slates continue next weekend with annual NLASF Scramble scheduled for Prairie Farms Golf Course.

Meanwhile, on the local league golf scene, last week was another busy up and down. Last Tuesday's men's league at Prairie Farms was called due to weather, but, Wednesday night went on as scheduled. Jeremy Jensen was low gross with an even 36, while Ric Floren was low net at 31.5. Independence Bank was high team with 20 points. The team was made up of Matt Wertheimer, Darrin Boss, Bill Keller and Byron Ophus.

Last Thursday night in Prairie Farms ladies league, Northern Montana Hospital scored 24.5 points for high-team honors. The squad was composed of Patti Nault, Terri Earl, Mary Pizzini and Brandy Lambourne. Ali Ward was low gross with a 43, while Lorrie Keller was low net with a 32.5.

Last Thursday night at BCGC men's league, Plain Green scored 24.5 points for high team. The team was composed of Daryl and Andrew Wright, Jim Raider and Ian Windy Boy. Kyle Miller was low gross with a 38, while Dave Rucinsky was low net with a 30.
