New Montana State University-Northern volleyball head coach Jerry Wagner knows the Frontier Conference well. And, he'll get his first taste of Frontier play in more than two decades when the Skylights begin conference play Sept. 19 in Lewistown, Idaho against Lewis-Clark State.
Northern's volleyball schedule for the 2019 season is mostly complete, including the Skylights' first three destinations. MSU-N will play three non-conference tournaments to start the Wagner's first season at the helm, beginning with a trip to Butte for the annual Big Sky Challenge Aug. 23-24. Northern will play four matches in Butte against Cascade Conference opponents yet to be determined, and that will kick off the season.
The second week of the season has Northern heading south to the Arizona Christian Tournament in Phoenix, Aug. 30-31. The Skylights will play four yet-to-be-determined opponents in Phoenix, before returning home to conclude non-conference play at the University of Providence Tournament in Great Falls, where the Skylights will again get four matches against opponents yet to be determined.
MSU-N's conference slate starts with road matches at LC State Sept. 19 and Montana Tech Sept. 21. Then, Northern will come back to the Armory Gymnasium for its home-opener against the Providence Argos Sept. 25, which is a Wednesday night.
In all, the Skylights play three of their first four Frontier matches on the road, as they close out September with a trip to Carroll College Sept. 28.
MSU-N begins October with a home match against Rocky Mountain College on Oct. 4, which starts a stretch of four straight league matches in the Armory. After the annual Frontier bye week, the Skylights resume their homestand against Montana Western Oct. 19 and then host Tech Oct. 24 and LC State Oct. 25.
The remainder of Northern's league slate will be tough as the Skylights play three of their last four on the road. Northern visits Providence on Halloween, followed by a senior night match at home against Carroll Nov. 1. The final week of the regular season will see the Skylights travel to Rocky Nov. 7 and Western Nov. 9.
Northern opens its season Aug. 23-24 in Butte. The Frontier Conference Tournament is set for Nov. 15-16 in Great Falls.
