Havre High tracksters find success at Eastern A Divisional

The Havre High girls track team has taken a big step forward this season, and this past weekend in Belgrade, at the Eastern A Divisional meet, the Blue Ponies demonstrated again how far they have come.

In addition to qualifying for 21 events at the Class A girls track meet, the Pony girls also captured three first-place finishes at divisionals and finished fourth in the team competition with 55 points. Laurel took home the Eastern A team title in the girls competition, finishing well ahead of the field with 129 points. Belgrade was second with 78 and Lewistown was third with 69.

"It was a pretty good showing for us there," HHS head coach John Ita said. "It was a lot of fun to watch. We were able to score some points which is something we haven't done for a while."

Of all the standout performances from Havre down in Belgrade, sophomore Loy Waid's was among the most impressive as she won a divisional title in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01. She also reached state in the 200 (7th) and was part of the 400 relay team that not only won a divisional championship, but also heads into state as the favorite with a season-best time of 50.52 which is the fastest of any team in Class A this season.

Waid, Jessa Chvilicek, Grace Loftus and Katie Wirtzberger reached the top of the podium in the short relay and three of those same runners, Waid, Chvilicek and Wirtzberger also ran in the 1,600 relay and, joined by Sadie Filius, the team from Havre posted a time of 4:19.95 to win that event too.

"Both of our relay teams ran performed really well," Ita said. "Loy also did really well and she won the 400. There is an awful lot of talent with all the teams there and it was pretty cool to see Loy do that. She ran a smart race and came on strong when she had to. Hat's off to her training. She comes to practice every day and she is very coachable and she is very fortunate to have avoided injuries. She has been injury free so she can train."

Yet, the success of the Pony girls in the running events didn't stop there. In fact, it was far from over. Chvilicek notched a third-place showing in the 100 (13.10) and the 200 (27.40). She also pre-qualified in the high jump. Filius, a freshman, also had a strong showing for Havre, getting third in the 300 hurdles (49.97). She also finished sixth in the 400 and also made state in the 200.

Kadia Miller and Hannah Haslem both contributed to the effort in the distance events. Miller scored points in the 3,200 (4th, 12:48) and the 1,600 (6th, 5:48), while Haslem finished seventh and 10th in the same events to punch her ticket to the Class A state meet. Waid added to her stellar day on the track by getting a mark of 33-02 in the triple jump to get sixth. Loftus managed to finish eighth in the long jump and Sarah Faber got eighth in the high jump. Emma Gillen also made it to state, in the 300 hurdles (8th). Wirtzberger qualified in the 100, 200 and 400.

"Our girls in the distance events had as good a weekend as they have had in a long time," Ita said. "Kadia and Hannah both did what they needed to do to place and get to state and they both had PR's (personal records) and just were really impressive."

In the boys Eastern A meet, Havre had some solid performances but didn't score any points. Laurel ran away with the team championship with 120 points. Miles City was second with 98 and Lewistown finished third with 58.

The Ponies still qualified five individuals for state track to go along with both relay teams. Andrew Boucher and Nolan Lotton were among the top performers as both made it to state in the 400, while also being part of both the 400 and 1,600 relay teams. Boucher and Lotton were joined in the 400 relay by Brandon Shaw and Brock Nystrom as they finished eighth (46.76). Mason Rismon and Orion Thivierge were part of the seventh-place effort of the 1,600-relay team.

"I couldn't be happier with the boys team," Ita said. "We didn't score any points but we took a bunch of young kids down there and they all got (personal records). They got the experience of going down to divisionals and they competed really well. They did the best that they could do."

In terms of individual events, Rismon was one of five Havre boys to advance to state thanks to an eighth-place finish in the javelin. Nystrom earned his way to state after a jump of 5-06 in the high jump and Thivierge finished 10th in the triple jump to extend his season.

Both Havre teams will head to Laurel for the Class A state track meet which is set to begin Friday and will conclude Saturday. Field events start at 9 a.m. with track events on both days set to get underway at 10:30 a.m.
