Walker receives Almas scholarship

Havre High School 2019 graduate Mackenzie Walker was awarded the Dr. David and Gloria Almas Scholarship for the 2019-20 academic year at Montana State University-Northern.

Walker, who has a 3.667 GPA, is the daughter of Luke Walker and Jennifer Keeley. She spends countless hours volunteering at the Feed My Sheep Soup Kitchen. Her school activities include Anime Club, Art Club, Spanish Club and Leadership High School.

She will pursue a nursing degree and has a long-term goal of becoming a registered nurse and, ultimately, a critical care nurse.

The scholarship is an annual endowed monetary scholarship and laptop computer given in memory of lifelong Havre residents Dr. David and Gloria Almas. David Almas' father, Dr. Joseph Almas, started his medical practice in Havre in the 1890s and his son continued the practice and was one of the original founders of the Havre Medical Clinic.

Both Dr. David and Gloria Almas were very actively involved in Havre commuinty activities.

Their son, R. James P. Almas, and his wife, Suzanne, reside in Jackson, Mississippi, and daughter, Emily, in Boston, Massachusetts, and all participated in the selection of the candidates.

Montana State University-Northern Foundation Scholarship ex officio members are Gail Rader and Renelle Braaten.
