Montana State Parks is offering a two-part “Be Snake Aware” series at First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park. “Be Snake Aware: Part I” will take place Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and “Part II” Saturday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
People who love hiking but get nervous about encountering snakes on the trail can join Dan “The Snake Man” Waitt for this series about snakes. In Be Snake Aware: Part I, people will learn which species of snake call the park home, why they are important to the ecosystem and the proper trail safety to practice when they see one. Part I will be held in the Visitor Center Classroom and is open to all ages.
For “Be Snake Aware: Part II,” people will join Wiatt for a guided hike through the park. Learn where snakes like to hide and how to avoid them on the trails. People can bring their cameras and get photos while hiking the park.
The hike will meet at the Upper Visitor Parking area. No open-toed shoes are allowed on the hike. Children must be accompanied by an adult and under control. Hike is limited to 20 participants. To reserve a spot, people can call 406-866-2217. A second hike may be offered if the first hike fills up.
