Blue Ponies shine in final home track meet

The Havre High track teams will be off for their traditional pre-divisional break this week. Yet, before the Blue Ponies embarked on their week off from competition, they hosted a number of local teams at the Havre Middle School track last Saturday in the Havre Invitational.

The meet featured Malta, Chester-Joplin-Inverness, Conrad, North Star, Rocky Boy, Sunburst, Box Elder and Big Sandy. But when it was all said and done, Malta ended up taking home both team titles. The M-Ettes beat out the Pony girls for first place with 157.5 points compared to 131.5, while CJI was third with 36.

The Havre boys, looking for their first team title of the season, came up just shy, finishing with 128 points, seven short of Malta, which finished with 135. CJI was third with 74, followed by North Star with 59.

"It was a pretty good day overall," HHS head coach John Ita said.

One of the bright spots for Havre, which honored its seniors before the meet, was the performance of senior distance runner Jakob Keller, who won the 1,600-meter run while also breaking the 5-minute barrier and finishing with a time of 4:58. Keller also finished second in the 800 with a time of 2:20 and third in the 400 after running it in 58.88.

"It felt good to do well," Keller said. "I haven't done that great this season. But it was my last meet here and my parents were watching me, so I wanted to finish strong."

Havre also won the 1,600 relay but no other teams entered. The other first-place finish from the Pony boys was from Mason Rismon, who took home the top spot in the javelin after a throw of 156-02. Rismon also finished third in the shot put (39-09), while seniors Dylan Chvilicek and Casey Mariani placed fourth and fifth in the discus and javelin respectively.

Brock Nystrom also had a solid day for Havre, finishing second to Caden Rettig of North Star in the pole vault and third in the high jump (5-06). Preston Glock helped add to the point total, getting second in the 110 hurdles to Evan Dahinden of CJI (17.63). Glock was also fourth in the 400. Nolan Lotton also placed in multiple events, finishing fourth in the short hurdles and sixth in the 100. Other local first-place finishes included Spencer Richter of CJI winning the 400, Jaden Sargent of North Star winning the 800 and Ryan Roth of Big Sandy winning the 3,200.

In the girls meet, Havre continued to rest some of its top athletes and that opened the door for a Malta victory. However, HHS still had some impressive individual performances, inclduing that of Kadia Miller, who won both the 1,600 (5:59) and the 3,200 (13:47). Hannah Haselm of Havre also won the 800 (2:49), finishing in front of her teammate Savannah Stewart, who was second. Haslem was third in the 1,600, while Stewart was sixth.

Senior Sarah Faber made the most of her final meet at the HMS track, winning the high jump (5-0) and also getting third in the long jump (14-5). Jessa Chvilicek finished second in the high jump for HHS, while Grace Loftus, who was second in the 200, finisehd fourth. Devyn Huebsch also placed fifth for Havre. She also got third in the triple jump. One spot ahead of her was fellow Blue Pony Loy Waid, who finished second. The other senior on the girls team, Abbey Morse, also found the podium, throwing the javelin 87-08 to get fourth.

Other Havre girls that managed to score points on Saturday were Amya Custer, who was sixth in the 100 and the 200, as well as Eliycia Moore, who was fifth in the 200. Emma Gillen also managed a third-place in the 100 hurdles; Julie Coyne was sixth in the same race. Madison Columbus also got sixth in the high jump.

The Havre girls also won both relays, but in the long relay, no other teams ran and in the 400-meter relay, Malta was the only other competitor.

Tatum Hull of CJI also had a stellar day, winning the 100 and the long jump. Janae West of North Star also won the pole vault and Rochelle Pease of Rocky Boy won the discus in addition to getting second in the shot put.

Both Pony teams will be off this week before heading to Belgrade for the Eastern A Divisional track meet May 17-18. The Class A state meet will be May 24-25.
