Norma was born on November 1, 1933, in Norma, ND, the sixth of 16 children born to Theodore and Inga (Evanger) Knutson. She was raised in North Dakota, attending Dakota Lutheran Academy, where she caught the eye of a "tall Montana guy." On June 6, 1954, Norma married Kermit Boyum, and the couple remained in North Dakota for a couple of years, while Norma taught school. Eventually, they relocated to Ledger, MT, where they farmed.

The couple moved around for a few years while Kermit worked in the oilfields. In 1959, the couple relocated to their farm north of Havre, and Norma remained home with their three children. There, she worked at FA Buttrey & Co. and occasionally substitute taught. In 1976, Kermit and Norma adopted their daughter Krissy, and, in 1979, they moved into town, where Norma worked at Northern Montana Hospital. Kermit passed away in 2012, and Norma spent the last several years spending time with her local grandchildren.

She enjoyed crafting, ceramics, pottery, and quilting. She loved animals and the outdoors, and she enjoyed taking her family for hikes in the coulees and the Bear Paws. When they were younger, Norma would load the children in the car and take them to Glacier Park to spend time there.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit Boyum, in 2012; parents, Theodore and Inga Knutson, and eight of her siblings.

Norma is survived by her children, Bruce (Brenda) Boyum and Kerma (Joe) Sarmiento, all of Havre, Mike (Kim) Boyum of Ossian, IA, and Kristal (Chris Quinn) Boyum of Havre; grandchildren, Heidi (Dwayn) Cooper, Bethany (Jamaal) Ali, Matthew Boyum, Kjerstin (Sean) McCune, Micah (Emily) Boyum, Ashley (Branden) Dillon, Annalise (Gonzalo) Santillan, Malachi and Alisabeth Boyum, Troy (Savannah), Cheyenne, and Kaleb Schafer; 17 great-grandchildren; seven siblings; and numerous nieces and nephews.
