Lewistown turns away Blue Ponies

Havre fastpitch hosts Belgrade today

The Havre High softball team hit the road Thursday night to take on the Lewistown Eagles in the Blue Ponies' first Central A conference game of the season and, unfortunately for HHS, things didn't go quite as planned.

Despite another spectacular effort at the plate from Kinzee Peterson, Peyton Brown and the rest of the offense, which managed to score 10 runs, Havre still fell to Lewistown by the score of 20-10.

The loss dropped the Ponies record to 2-5 overall and their mark in the Central A to 0-1. Havre will be back in action this afternoon when the Ponies will host Belgrade at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field for a Central A doubleheader. First pitch goes out at 3.

"We actually didn't pitch too badly," HHS head coach Tony Vigliotti said. "Both Lauren (Kato) and Sam (Oliver) pitched, we just gave up too many extra outs. Defensively, we have to get mentally tougher and make the plays that we should make."

Thanks to a home run by Peterson, who also hit a total of five home runs in four games last weekend in the Lewistown Invitational, Havre was able to grab the lead early in the conference matchup. Ponies junior Peyton Brown also helped Havre score in double figures for the third time in the last five games, with a home run of her own, which was her first of the season.

Yet, the Ponies, who actually held the lead three separate times in the game, were unable to hold it and despite pitching both Lauren Kato and Sam Oliver, Lewistown scored 20 runs to win the game by 10. Lewistown finished with 22 hits in the win. Both Macy Mangold and Hailey Welsh drove in three runs each in the win.

"Our pitching wasn't too bad," Vigliotti said. "We just made too many mistakes."

Havre takes on Belgrade today in a home doubleheader that starts at 3.
