Alissa Hewitt is once again bringing Scott Jackson of Scott Jackson Dog Training classes to the Hi-Line for the third straight year.
Hewitt organized holding three days of dog training classes, June 21-23, at the Great Northern Fairgrounds.
For puppies up to six months old, a class is set for Friday, June 21, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Basic training is available for dogs six months and up Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Advanced training will also take place Friday and Saturday i to 4 p.m. for dogs of all ages and breeds.
Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon, Jackson will be available to answer attendees’ questions. Classes cost $40 each, but a discount is offered for people bringing two or more dogs per class.
Jackson is a former California Sheriff’s Department Lead K-9 Trainer.
He taught classes last year at the Blaine County Fairgrounds.
“Our puppy class is for dogs up to six months,” Hewitt said. “The class teaches how to properly use the equipment, walk, basic commands like sit and stay.”
“During every class Scott works with the dogs as a group and also works with each person and dog individually to work on specific issues,” she said.
Hewitt added that the classes also teach socialization with other people and dogs.
“Advanced training is for those who have had basic training and want to take that up a notch,” Hewitt said. “Scent work, hunting, tricks are part of the training. … Anything people want to learn outside the scope of the basics.”
Hewitt is offering free training to anyone who has adopted a dog from the months of April to June, from either the Havre Animal Shelter or Paws in Chinook.
“I really believe that any issue can be corrected with proper training,” Hewitt said. “If we can lessen the load on shelters and focus on training, we can make a huge difference.”
Jackson was with the sheriff’s K-9 unit for two decades. He then spent time working with military and private contractors, training narcotics and explosive K-9 units. He now works with the American Kennel Club for the western region as a kennel inspector. He also offers private training and classes on the weekends.
Hewitt said classes fill up fast so people should contact her at 357-3316 to reserve spots.
