Havre community gets a Taste of Jazz

Monday, 176 people spent the evening tasting refreshments and listening to student performances in the Havre High School gymnasium during the Havre High School music department's annual Taste of Jazz event.

"My favorite part is the music itself," Havre High School band director Zachary Paulus said in an email. "Jazz is an organic form of American art and it's great to showcase the students who keep it alive."

The event started at 7 p.m. and included live and silent auctions and a raffle, he said, adding that the proceeds from auctioning off pies, centerpieces and other gift baskets will go straight toward funding music camps in the summer and other scholarship offers for students, including college scholarships.

The event included performances by 17 seniors and a number of other students, Paulus said, adding that each student in the ensemble had a solo.

A poster for the event lists senior musicians as Kaleb Gardner, John Klein and Holly Strobel in the jazz band; Kadyn Acor, Abigail Morse, Jera Verploegen, Aria Pratt, Mackenzie Parrotte, Marcee Murphy, Aryana Vauthier, Natalie Verploegen, Jordan Jarman, Ammon Lines, Trevor Bulkley, Tony Antley, Aarron Thompson and Evan Davison as the vocal jazz musicians.

The decades-old tradition has become a favorite of music-lovers in the area.

The peformance included selections by the Jazz Band and vocal selections by Hi-Liters and Belles Voix, while people listened, ate and danced.
