MSU-N Rodeo hosting its PRCA rough stock challenge

Montana State University-Northern Rodeo’s showcase fundraiser event, the PRCA Extreme Bares and Broncs Challenge, will be bringing in some of the nation’s best pro-rodeo bareback and saddle bronc riders tonight and Saturday in the Bigger Better Barn.

Northern head coach Doug Kallenberger said this competition is replacing their annual BullDazzle fundraiser, giving the other two rodeo rough stock events a spot in the limelight.

“It’s going to have the same feel as the BullDazzle,” he said, “but bigger.”

Included in the draw are cowboys from southern border states up into several Canadian provinces, as well as a rider from Australia.

“Some of the top bareback and saddle bronc riders in the world should be in Havre,” Kallenberger said.

Cowboys entered in the Challenge are Jesse Kruse, Isaak Diaz, Taos Muncy, Richmond Champion, J.J. Elshere, Jesse Davis, Zeke Thurston, Clay Elliot, Austin Foss and more.

While the rough stock rides start at 7 p.m. each night, the spectator action begins at 6:30 p.m. with bidding in a Calcutta, Kallenberger said. This gives the audience a chance to win some money as well, he added.

Both evenings will include food and beer concessions provided by the rodeo teams’ booster club, a big-screen TV and a fully heated barn.

Pre-sold tickets can be purchased for $18 at Independence Bank, Stockman Bank and Norman’s Ranch and Sportswear, as well as from any Northern rodeo member, until 5 p.m. today. Tickets at the door will be $20, but youth 10 and younger will get in free, and Northern students with an I.D. for $10.

Prize money from the rodeo, which has a $10,000 added payout for each event, will count toward the 2019 National Finals Rodeo and Rookie of the Year Standings for the competitors.

“It’s gonna be a great show,” Kallenberger said, with riders that include three world champions and 25 National Finals Rodeo champions, and horses that have seen a total of more than 100 trips in the NFR.

“So you know it’s gonna be fun,” he added.
