When it comes to local boys basketball, another exciting season went into the books this past weekend as both Chinook and Hays-Lodge Pole represented the District 9C in the Class C boys state tournament in Billings.
For Chinook, it was the Sugarbeeters' first berth at state since 1986, when they belonged in Class B. For HLP, it was the second trip in three years to the Metra, after the Thunderbirds won the Northern C championship back in 2017.
This time around, the T-Birds finished second to Chinook in the Northern C championship game and when the District 9C All-Conference teams were released, it was no surprise to see the Beeters lead the way with three First-Team selections in Isaac Bell, Cord Schneider and Hunter Neibauer.
Fort Benton, which advanced to divisionals along with Chinook and HLP also had two players make the list in Garrett Diekhans and Hayden Diekhans. Kyle Young Jr. and Gilbert Snow both earned First-Team honors as well for the T-Birds and joining the other seven players was Cody Welsh from Turner.
Trajan Hannum of Chinook also got Second-Team All-Conference honors for the Beeters and joining him on the team was Jeremy Pretty Paint of HLP, Damon Bird of Fort Benton, Caden Rettig of North Star, Chris Burns of Box Elder, Tyler Wanken of CJI and Brock Proulx, as well as Ryan Roth of Big Sandy.
When it came to the Northern C All-State representatives, the 9C also dominated, taking eight of the 12 selections. Chinook placed three players on the All-State team with Bell, Schneider and Neibauer named. Garrett and Hayden Diekhans of Fort Benton each earned All-State honors along with Snow and Young Jr. of Hays Lodge-Pole. Welsh of Turner also played his way onto the team after a stellar season.
The others to make the team were Zane Stahl of Winnett-Grass Range, Brendan Wing of Belt, Noah Ambeuhl of Great Falls Central and Justin Stulc of Roy-Winifred.
