Bears start a big week for the Hi-Line with a state championship

The Hi-Line is abuzz right now with high school basketball. State tournaments wrap up this weekend, and plenty of area teams will be taking their shot at glory.

However, the Box Elder girls basketball team is already reveling in glory of their own.

Saturday night in Great Falls, Box Elder edged Roy-Winifred to win its second consecutive Class C girls state championship. The Bears hoisted the championship trophy with a 48-42 victory over the Outlaws inside the Four Seasons Arena.

"I am just so proud of these girls," Box Elder head coach Joel Rosette said. "They embodied everything you would want in a basketball team. They showed toughness, heart, determination and they did something that made history. No team in Box Elder history, boys or girls has ever won two championships in a row, so that was incredible for this team to come together and do that."

It was a history-making night for Box Elder, not only because the Bears backed up their 2018 state championship they won last March in Butte, but it gave the school its four state championship in basketball since 2014. The Box Elder boys won state titles in 2014 and 2016, and the girls have now won two in a row.

Of course, area squads could be bringing even more hardware home by this Saturday night. The Havre High girls will try to defend their 2018 state championship this weekend at the Class A state tournament in Great Falls. The undefeated Chinook boys, along with Hays-Lodge Pole, will play at the Class C state tournament in Billings, and the Harlem girls and Rocky Boy boys are headed to the Class B state tournament this weekend in Belgrade.
