District 1B in Shelby, 2B in Glasgow this weekend
After battling through 18 regular season games, basketball teams from across the state are getting ready for district tournaments this week, as the postseason begins for Montana high school hoops.
As far as what that means for local teams, in Class B at least and the Northern B, it means its time for both the 1B and 2B tournaments for boys and girls, which will set the field for each Northern B Divisional in the coming weeks. The 1B tournaments will be hosted and played in Shelby starting Thursday and concluding Saturday, while the 2B tournaments will be in Glasgow, Thursday through Saturday.
The top four teams in each tournament will advance to divisionals.
When it comes to the District 2B girls, the Harlem Wildcats will come in as the favorite after finishing with the top team in the regular season edging out Wolf Point. Led by All-State standout L'Tia Lawrence, the Wildcats, who already have a place at divisonals locked up, Harlem will take on either Poplar or Glasgow, who will match up in a play-in game to see who reaches divisonals. The winner will of that contest will play Harlem Friday night at 8 p.m. If Harlem wins, it will face either Malta or Wolf Point in the championship Saturday night in Glasgow. Otherwise, the Wildcats would play in the consolation game for third and fourth at 4:30 p.m.
The Harlem boys will also be in Glasgow starting Thursday but the Wildcats will be playing in a do or die scenario Thursday against the host team Glasgow at 6:30 p.m. The Wildcats, who do boast some talented players such as R.J. Ramone, Lane Allen and Brad Cichosz are capable of putting some wins together, but if they fall to Glasgow, their season will be over. If Harlem wins, it will play Poplar Friday night at 6:30 in the semifinals. Then, Harlem would play either Wolf Point or Malta in the third-place game (Saturday, 3 p.m.) or the championship which is Saturday night at 6:30.
As far as the District 1B tournament goes in Shelby, things are a little more complicated, especially when it comes to making it to state. When it comes to the boys side of the bracket, the field is loaded with talented teams but only four of the top six will advance. The means a team like Rocky Boy may actually need to win a pair of games to advance to the Northern B Divisional. The Stars, who will face Cut Bank in the opening round Thursday (7:30 p.m.) are led by Frankie Bacon, Wyatt Caplette and Olin Arkinson and will be looking to make another postseason run after getting third at state last season.
If the Stars win they will play Shelby in the semifinals Friday at 2:30 p.m. If Rocky Boy loses to Cut Bank, it will play at 10 a.m. Saturday to go to divisionals. The boys championship game is scheduled for 6:30 Saturday night in Shelby and the consolation game will be at 3:30 p.m. the same day. All the teams that make the consolation game or the championship will advance. The other side of the bracket features Fairfield, which will play in the semifinals against Conrad or Choteau.
The Rocky Boy girls will also be in Shelby for the 1B tournament and they will open Thursday (2:30 p.m.) with a challenging opponent in Fairfield. If the Stars win, they will play in the semifinals Friday night at 7:30 against Shelby which gets a bye. If the Stars lose in the semifinals they would play Saturday morning in a loser-out game to reach the state tournament. If they lost to Fairfield, though, they would play Saturday at 10 a.m. If Rocky Boy, led by Sasha Coffee won that game, it would also move on to divisionals.
The District 1B girls championship game will be Saturday night at 8. The consolation game will be early in the evening at 5 p.m. If Rocky Boy is in either of those games it will play at divisionals. The other teams in the bracket are Cut Bank, which will get a bye into the semis and will play the winner of Conrad and Choteau.
The top four teams in each district advance to the Northern B Girls Tournament next weekend in Malta. The four boys teams in each district will play in the Northern B Feb. 28-March 2 in Shelby.
