It was an emotional senior weekend in the Havre Ice Dome for the Havre Ice Hawks high school hockey team. And, it ended on a high note.
Hosting the Flathead Fusion for their final two home games of the regular season, the Ice Hawks earned an important split, including a dramatic 5-4 win on Sunday morning.
After falling to the Fusion on Saturday night, Havre rebounded Sunday, opening with a goal from Donovan McLain. The Ice Hawks though, trailed 2-1 after the first period, but, Ethan Roberts knotted things up early in the second. The Fusion scored twice to ahead 4-2, but Havre rallied with two more goals in period, one by Noah Kirsch and another from Roberts to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the third. And in the third period, Havre would keep the Fusion out of the net, while McLain scored the game-winner at the 11:46 mark, a power-play goal, giving the Ice Hawks a big win.
McLain finished the game with two goals, as did Roberts, who also had an assist as well. Bridger Staples also had two assists, and Dexter Beck had one. Kinzee Peterson saved 40 shots on goal between the pipes.
In Saturday night's game, the Ice Hawks fell behind early in a 7-3 loss. The Fusion led 3-1 after the first period, with Havre getting a goal from August Eacker. Cole Hanson added a power-play goal in the second, but the Fusion led 5-1 and scored three straight times in the third before McLain netted a final Havre goal on an assist from Roberts. Peterson stopped 41 of 48 shots on goal in the loss.
Before Saturday's game, with the Fusion, Havre's seniors, Roberts, Peterson, Hanson, Eacker, Trent Shettel, Kirsch, Bay Merker and Jace Butcher were honored.
