Blue Ponies honor their seniors Saturday against Lewistown
The Havre High girls basketball team is closing in on the end of the regular season and for the Blue Ponies, that means this Saturday's home game against Lewistown will be last home game of the season.
But for three Pony seniors, Kassidy Compton, Lauren Kato and Abbey Morse, it will be the final home game of their Havre High basketball careers.
"It's really tough," Morse said. "It's sad. It's weird how fast it has all gone by. But we love being part of this team. It's a really special thing and I think it will be a good night."
Kato agreed.
"There are good and bad things about it," Kato said. "It's hard because it will be our last game (at the HHS gymnasium) but it's good too because we all have things we can look forward to after basketball, but it's going to be sad it being our last home game and not being part of the team."
Havre will play Lewistown Saturday night at 5, however, prior to that, the Ponies will battle Rocky Boy tonight. HHS played the Morning Stars at home and the two teams will meet again in Rocky Boy at 6 p.m. Then, the Ponies will celebrate senior night Saturday against the Eagles.
"It has gone by quick," Compton said. "It will be emotional."
While the final home game can be emotional for players, it can mean a lot of coaches too and head coach Dustin Kraske spoke about what Kato, Compton and Morse have meant to the Ponies.
"They have done a wonderful job in our program for all four years," Kraske said. "I am proud of Abigail. I think she has had a great senior season. She is taking the role that she has been given and she is taking that very well. The same thing can be said about Lauren and Kassidy. They are good, hard-working kids that want to play on our team and they are doing a great job for us. They are great leaders. They are positive to our kids all the time. They are encouraging when things don't go well and they have handled their role coming off the bench very well and have made our team very good. They are a treat to coach. They want to be good and they want our team to be good."
Before Havre takes the floor for senior night, it will take on Rocky Boy (3-11) first. The Ponies won the first game between the two teams going away and should have a good chance to do the same behind the consistently strong play from Kyndall Keller. Kadia Miller, Jessa Chvilicek, Loy Waid and Sadie Filius have also played well on both ends of the court for Havre recently.
"We have some things that we want to focus on defensively," Kraske said. "Of course we want to play well, take care of the ball, defend and all that stuff
After taking on Rocky Boy Thursday, Havre will return to the Pony Corral for the final home game of the season against Lewistown. With a win, the Ponies can finish unbeaten at home for the second straight season.
"I think that just shows how much we like playing here," Kraske said. "Our kids play well here and the community has been great about coming out and supporting us and we really appreciate that."
Saturday, the Ponies will host their Central A rivals Lewistown (2-11, 0-5), who will be led into action by Anna Zimmer, the only Eagles player that average in double figures at just over 10 a game. Kacee Gordon is second on the team with five per game.
Havre will go for the season sweep against both Rocky Boy tonight (6 p.m.) and Lewistown on Saturday. Tip-off time between the Ponies and Eagles is set for 5 p.m.
