Ponies send seniors out in style at Class A Meet

The Havre High swimming teams got the chance to compete in front of the hometown fans one last time Saturday at the Havre Community Pool and in the process, the Blue Ponies honored a large class of seniors.

"It was a little heartbreaking," HHS assistant coach Jill Cammon said. "We have so many of them that came to us as freshmen that had never swum before and to see how far they have come in the past four years is really awesome. It's going to be really sad without them."

While it was the last home meet for many of the Pony swimmers in attendance, it was also a chance to compete against two of the tougher teams in Class A in Billings Central and Hardin, in what is called the Class A Meet. When it came to the girls meet, Hardin finished as the top team with a total of 231 points. Billings Central was second, finishing with 222 points and Havre got third with 144.

The battle for the girls team title was quite close with the final margin between Hardin and Billings Central ending up at nine points. However, there was a little more distance between the teams on the boys side of things, as Billings Central won the team title with 212 points. Havre finished second with 189, holding off Hardin for third which ended with 173 points.

"Overall, I thought that the kids did really well," said Cammon, who is temporarily filling in for head coach Bill Kilgore. "The boys were able to get second and the biggest thing is that we had a lot of really good times. There was a lot of improvement so that was really great to see."

One of the Pony swimmers that had a solid day in his final home meet was senior Ammon Lines, who finished third in a couple of different events, swimming the boys 100-meter butterfly in 1:25.82 and also third in the 50-meter freestyle.

"It was absolutely amazing," Lines said of his home meet. "I just tried to absorb every single second of it. I was out of town recently, so my times weren't as good, but being here one last time, it was just the best."

The Pony boys team also got some other standout performances and one individual that shined was Jacob Miller (2:34), who finished first in the boys 200 IM ahead of fellow Havre swimmer Paxtin McCann (3:00). Sergio Tamayo also had a stellar showing, winning the 100 free (57.11) and finishing second (2:07) in the 200 free, an event that saw John Klein of Havre get fourth (2:32). Christian Mathis was also fifth for the Ponies in the 200 free.

Miller added to his day by also finishing second in the 100 butterfly (1:15). Another Pony, Hiram Cammon, also finished fourth in the same race with a time of 1:26. Cammon also reached the podium in the 50 free, getting fourth behind Lines, thanks to a 30.12. Pedro Bereta also finished sixth for HHS (31.76).

The 400 free was another race that saw multiple Ponies place as McCann was second (5:24) and Klein was third (5:37). Mathis joined the group of boys that placed in multiple events, getting second in the 100 backstroke (1:14).

With the girls team, the most productive swimmer for the Ponies was Megan Miller, who earned first place in the 50 free (31.84) and also came in second in the 100 butterfly. Hannah Lunak also had a strong showing in the 100 backstroke as she finished second with a time of 1:21.

Some other girls who found the podium for Havre Saturday were Tori Messineo, who was fifth in the 200 free (3:08), Aria Pratt, who was fourth in the 200 IM (3:27) and also Angela Rhines, who was sixth in the 200 IM with a time of 3:35. In the 400 freestyle, Blakelee Lines swam a 6:25 to finish third, three spots ahead of teammate Lacey Huseby, who was sixth (6:38). Rhines also placed fourth in 100 breaststroke after posting a time of 1:38.

The Havre girls finished third in the 400-freestyle relay, fourth in the 200-freestyle relay and fourth in the 200-medley relay. In the relays, the boys were second in the 200 medley and the 200 free, as well as fourth in the 400 free.

Both Havre teams will be back in the pool this Saturday when they head to Great Falls to take on Great Falls High and CMR.
