Hi-Line Girls Roundup
After much anticipation, the high school girls basketball season opened this past weekend and things got started right here in Havre at the Native American Classic.
One of the matchups that highlighted the three-day basketball extravaganza was the showdown between defending Class C state champion Box Elder and potential Class B contender Harlem. But Thursday night, it was clear that the Wildcats aren't quite in the Bears league just yet, as the Box Elder girls defeated their Class B rival 79-55. Lilly Gopher and Joelnell Momberg led the way with a combined 40 points. Gopher scored 21 and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the process, while Momberg hit three times from deep on her way to 19. Skylee Dirden led Harlem with 20 points in the loss, while L'Tia Lawrence also pitched in with 12.
Box Elder finished up its opening weekend Saturday against Arlee and the Bears cruised to a 2-0 start with a 78-46 win. Box Elder opened the game with 16 points but blew it wide open with a 27-point second quarter. Momberg sparked the Bears with a game-high 28 points. Gopher also contributed with 11.
Harlem wasn't able to knock off Box Elder, but on Friday, the Wildcats took Lodge Grass and notched their first win of the season in a 55-39 victory. Lawrence paced the Wildcats with 13 points in the win; Dirden added 12.
In other action Thursday at the Native American Classic, the Rocky Boy girls were defeated by Kainai 42-33, while Hays-Lodge Pole also lost to the Browning JV. The Thunderbirds also battled Kainai Saturday and fell 54-42. Closing things out at the NAC for local girls basketball teams was Rocky Boy, who knocked off Lodge Grass 49-48 Saturday morning inside the Armory Gymasnium at Montana State University-Northern. The win improved the Morning Stars to 1-1 on the season.
Many teams may have opened their seasons at the Native American Classic, but Chester-Joplin-Inverness also hosted its own tournament that featured Sunburst, Chinook and Power. CJI opened with a 40-37 win over Power. Kayona Fraser scored 15 points in the win. Peyton Hawks added 12. Saturday, the Hawks won their second consecutive game to open the season, downing Sunburst 50-41 in Chester. Hawks had 17 points in the win; Fraser added 15.
The Chinook Sugarbeeters also opened their season Friday in Chester and did so by playing Sunburst. Yet, after the Beeters scored 22 points in the first and second quarters, the game quickly became a blowout and Chinook won going away 62-15. Kourtney Hanson scored 28 points in the win, while Rachel Gunderson pitched in with 20. Saturday, Chinook wrapped up a 2-0 weekend thanks to a 39-31 win over Power. Gunderson had 19 points to pace the Beeters. Hanson also had a solid outing with 11.
Big Sandy and North Star also took part in a preseason tournament with Augusta and Dutton-Brady and both teams walked away 2-0. The Knights opened the season with a 64-31 win over Augusta and followed it up with a 70-14 win over Dutton-Brady.
Oppositely, Big Sandy took on Dutton-Brady Friday night and won 42-27 behind 14 points from Amanda Cline. Laney Gregory added eight and Amiya Griffith finished with eight as well. Then, the Pioneers completed the 2-0 start under new head coach Naomi Terry as they routed August a 68-44. Cline finished with 19 for the Pioneers, who also got 17 points from Gregory, 16 from Jaylyn Cline and 12 from Griffith in the win.
The Fort Benton girls also opened their season with a win Friday against Tri-Cities by the score of 71-58.
