It was a busy week of basketball along the Hi-Line as essentially every team across the state was playing on the first full weekend of high school basketball.
Of course, in these parts that means the Native American Classic and a number of other preseason tournaments. The Native American Classic, which was held at the Armory Gymnasium in Havre on the campus of Montana State University-Northern, opened with the annual rivalry game between Rocky Boy and Box Elder. The Stars took home the 62-52 win last Thursday.
The Stars would go on to take on Arlee Saturday night, but before that, the Bears got their first win of the season as they disposed of Kainai of Alberta by the score of 78-41. Against Rocky Boy, Quentin Limberhand scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, then followed it up with 20 points and 11 rebounds in the win over Kainai. Malique Rosette also had 18 points in the win Saturday for Box Elder. Kobe Sutherland scored 14 points and grabbed eight boards.
Rocky Boy got the day to rest Friday, before taking part in one of the marquee games of the tournament Saturday, featuring the Stars, the third-place team in Class B last season and Arlee, the defending Class C state champion. In a back-and-forth battle, that saw the Stars head into the fourth quarter down 36-35, Rocky Boy prevailed 52-43. Frankie Bacon scored 15 points in the win, including seven in the fourth quarter, while Blake Cantrell also had a big night for Rocky, connecting on four 3-pointers and scoring a game-high 21 points.
Hays-Lodge Pole was also in action at the Native American Classic starting Thursday, taking on the Browning JV team in that matchup, the Thunderbirds were victorious 65-54. Kyle Young Jr. poured in 15 points in the win for HLP, which also got a 14-point effort from Gilbert Snow. On Saturday, the T-Birds fell to 1-1 on the season after a 66-49 loss at the hands of Class B's Poplar. Snow and Jeremy Pretty Paint each led the T-Birds in defeat with 11.
A fourth team from the Hi-Line also took part in the Native American Classic and that was Harlem. The Wildcats took on Heart Butte Friday, and then they went head-to-head with Lodge Grass for a half, trailing 37-36, before a 29-0 to start the quarter gave Lodge Gross a 95-66 victory.
While much of the attention was on all the teams in Havre, Chinook, the defending District 9C champions also opened their season Friday night against Sunburst. The Sugarbeeters' Isaac Bell scored 16 points to lead Chinook to a 63-40 victory. Cord Schneider also added 12 points, as did Brenden Edwards. On Saturday, Chinook took on Power in another battle of Northern C squads and against the Pirates, Chinook rolled to victory, winning by a score of 64-20. Schneider led the way for both teams with 20 points. He was followed by Ethan Bell, who finished with 14 and Isaac Bell, who had 12.
While Chinook and Sunburst opened up the CJI Preseason Tournament, the Hawks were also in action Friday, dropping their first game of the season to Power. Tyler Wanken scored 12 points in the loss for CJI, which also got 11 from Spencer Richter. On Saturday, the Hawks took on Sunburst and were defeated 54-35 to start the season 0-2. Wanken had 21 points. Dahinden contributed with six.
Big Sandy also opened its season this weekend and that start came on Friday against Dutton-Brady, a game the Pioneers ended up winning 67-46. Ryan Roth scored 29 points in the win. Big Sandy also got 15 points from Parker Proulx and 13 points from Brock Proulx in the win. The very next night, Big Sandy took on Augusta and rolled to an 82-28 victory. Roth scored 28 in that one, while Brock Proulx added 24. Kade Strutz also pitched in with 12.
While Big Sandy opened its season against Dutton-Brady, North Star started against Augusta in the same preseason tournament Friday and rolled to a 72-24 win as Hayden Massar scored 21 points. Austin Hansen finished with 16 and Bailey Spicher pitched in with 11. North Star improved to 2-0 Saturday, thanks to a 57-54 win over Dutton-Brady. The Knights are now 2-0 under new head coach Cody Donoven.
Elsewhere in the 9C this past weekend, the Fort Benton boys started the season 2-0, knocking off Tri-Cities Friday 55-31 before knocking off Centerville Saturday 71-66.
