The Blue Ponies Defend their Home
Each new swim season has to start somewhere, and in some way. And for the Havre Blue Pony swim teams, there's no better way to start the season then in the friendly confines of their own pool.
That's exactly what the Blue Ponies did as they played host to the CMR Rustlers and Great Falls High Bison in the season-opening Havre Invitational at the Havre Community Pool.
"It went real well," Havre High head coach Bill Kilgore said. "We have a lot of new swimmers, where it was their first meet, so it was really good experience for them. And for the whole team, it's always nice to start the year at home. They're a little more comfortable in their pool. And overall, I think we had a real good showing."
Of course, Havre was up against two of the best programs in Class AA in the Rustlers, who swept the team titles, and the Bison, who finished second in each meet. The Havre girls scored 122 points and the HHS boys finished with 117.
Still, the Ponies got plenty of outstanding performances in the pool Saturday, and against really good competition.
On the girls side, sophomore Kobi Burchard scored 16 points for the Ponies, finishing second in both the 100-meter butterfly and the 100-meter breaststroke. Burchard had a photo finish in the 100 breaststroke, too. Lacey Huseby had a strong day as well, scoring nine points for the Ponies, placing in the 100 freestyle and the grueling 400 free. Blakelee Lines and Angela Rhines were tough, too. Lines finished fifth in the 100 free, while Rhines was sixth in both the 100 free and the 100 breaststroke.
In the relays, the Havre girls finished third and sixth in the 200 medley, sixth in the 200 free and fourth and sixth in the 400 free.
On the boys side, the Ponies were paced by exchange student Sergio Tomayo, who took second in the 200 individual medley and third in the 100 butterfly to score 15 points for HHS. Ammon Lines and John Klein both placed for the Ponies, scoring 10 points each. Klein finished sixth in the 400 free and fifth in the 100 breaststroke, while Lines came in fourth in the 100 breaststroke. Paxtin McCann also placed in the butterfly, as did Hiram Cammon in the 200 free.
In the relays, the Havre boys finished third in the 200 medley, fourth in the 200 free and fourth in the 400 free.
"Angela Rhines had a fantastic meet," Kilgore said. "I would say Morgan Flammond did, too. On the boys side of things, John Klein came in from the ACT and jumped in and swam back-to-back-to-back for us, he's looking good, and Sergio Tomayo, he's just phenomenal. But we had a lot of kids really stand out. They all did really well, and it was a great start to the season for us."
Indeed, Saturday was a great day for the enthusiastic Pony swim teams. It was a great jumping off point for the Ponies, who have two meets next weekend in Great Falls, then won't compete again until January.
"I'm excited about where we're at," Kilgore said. "The kids are training hard and doing a great job. So the goal moving forward is just to get a little better each day, a little better at each meet."
Havre will compete against GFH and CMR again Friday in Great Falls, the take part in the Great Falls Relays Saturday. The Ponies will be back in their own pool for the Class A Meet Jan. 5.
