A high-profile U.S. senator was in Havre today for a Get Out and Vote event for a high profile election.
U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Montana Auditor Republican Matt Rosendale spoke to more than 90 people about national issues that are being discussed in Congress and Rosendale's campaign for Montana's U.S. Senate seat.
Rosendale is challenging incumbent U.S. Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., in his bid for re-election in this November.
"The reason I'm supporting Matt Rosendale is not because he is a Republican," Paul said, "but because I think he will stand up for balancing the budget and only spending what comes in, and I think he has the guts to stand up to either party. Please sent Matt up there to help."
Paul said in an interview after the event that he has not endorsed many other Republican candidates nationwide but has selected a few he believes can make a positive impact in the U.S. Congress. Rosendale, he said, is one of the few candidates he endorses and he was glad to come to Havre and show his support.
Rosendale said that, in the past, he has served Montana, protecting Montanans' rights as he has promised during his past campaigns for other elected offices in the state. He added that he plans to take that same attitude with him if elected, to the U.S. Senate.
"I've come before you and I said I will serve the way that I campaign, and you sent me to Helena," Rosendale said. "You asked me to reduce spending and to reduce regulations and to protect your property rights and your gun rights and the sanctity of life and I did those things and if you send me to Washington, I will do those things for you there as well."
"Make sure everybody turns out, because this election will be close," Rosendale said.
