The battle between Chinook and Chester-Joplin-Inverness last Saturday wasn't quite as big as the so-called Hi-Line Bowl of 2015, however, it was another great chapter in the rivalry between the two schools.
Back in 2015, the Beeters hosted the Hawks when both teams were undefeated and duked it out for the Northern C Championship. Chinook won that game and went on to win the state championship. This time, the two teams were meeting for the final Northern C playoff berth and, once again, Chinook emerged with a win, thanks to a scintillating effort from their defense, which preserved a 12-8 victory. Chinook will travel to Fairview Saturday to take part in the 8-Man playoffs.
"It was a big game against (Chester-Joplin-Inverness)," Chinook head coach Mike Jones said after the game. "I am just glad I got to be part of one."
Early on, Chinook was dominating but failed to capitalize on a couple of red-zone opportunities in the first quarter, leaving the score 0-0 after one. Then, in the second quarter, after a long run by Spencer Richter got the Hawks in scoring position, Richter, the quarterback, finished the drive with a one-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-goal. The two-point conversion gave CJI an 8-0 lead with 9:31 left in the second quarter.
The Beeters forced three interceptions in the first half, yet simply couldn't take advantage. They were finally able to get on the board when Trajan Hannum connected with Carson Powell on a 40-yard touchdown pass, which trimmed the Hawks lead to 8-6 at halftime.
Early in the third quarter, Sam Dumas broke off a 50-yard run and then scored a few plays later from 10 yards out, giving Chinook the 12-8 lead. While Dumas gave the Beeters the lead, it wouldn't be his last big play of the night.
After turning back CJI on a goal-to-go situation, the Hawks had one final chance, starting with the ball in their own territory. With just over two minutes to go, Richter lofted a ball downfield, a ball that was picked off by Dumas, in a play that ultimately wrapped up the win for the Beeters.

Big Sandy 79, Valier 33
The Big Sandy Pioneers were home again last Friday night, hoping to close the season strong before entering into the Class C Six-Man playoffs this week. Well, in terms of finishing on a high note, Big Sandy did exactly that, drubbing conference rival Valier 79-33.
Big Sandy had another dominant night on the ground, rushing the ball 28 times for 403 yards. Sophomore Kade Strutz, who has been putting up eye-popping numbers on the ground all season, did it again finishing with 269 yards and six touchdowns. Brock Proulx also ran six times for 112 yards and three touchdowns. Big Sandy will take on White Sulpher Springs Saturday in Big Sandy at 1 p.m. in the first round of the 8-Man playoffs.

Geraldine-Highwood 74, North Star 42
The North Star Knights finished up their 2018 season last Wednesday when they hosted Geraldine-Highwood. The Rivals, who finished with the best record in the Six-Man North Division, routed the Knights 74-42.
While it has been a tough season for the Knights, with North Star being forced to forfeit a couple of times this season, one of the bright spots has been junior Caden Rettig and he delivered another solid performance Wednesday, rushing for 357 yards, throwing for 86 and accounting six total touchdowns in the season finale for the Knights.
