Editor,
“It’s the economy, stupid,” was once a campaign motto. Likewise in this election it’s no surprise the current ruling politicos claim credit for a thriving economy. I believe any economy-related credit or blame we ascribe is oversimplified, overrated and is not what this election is about.
I believe this big flap about the economy is covering the more important issue of moral integrity. Our choices should be measured by values such as equity, fairness, civility, truth and what serves the greater common good. I see those values up front and center for some; for others, the water gets muddy. Follow the money, and our situation gets clearer: politicians often come into power through disguised or hidden corporate funding, with “strings attached.” It was all about money in last winter’s Federal tax legislation which fueled the exploding Federal deficit, creating a huge problem for all of us down the road, a problem the wealthy are not likely to help solve.
My profit margin does not define me or my vote. I want it to be true that we are a country where our flag indeed does wave over the land of the free and home of the brave. We are free when we summon courage to speak truth to power and honor our connections to so much more than the content of our wallets.
