Eastern Oregon shuts down Northern in night game

The Montana State University-Northern football team couldn't have asked for a better start Saturday night against Eastern Oregon. Unfortunately, the Lights weren't able to finish and were defeated soundly 58-24.

The two Frontier Conference teams, which met Saturday night in Havre at Blue Pony Stadium, combined for nearly 1,000 total yards and 82 points. However, most of them came via Eastern Oregon, which racked up 637 yards in the 34-point win.

Early on though, it looked like the Lights would give the Mountaineers all they could handle. Down 7-0, Northern tied the game on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Wilson to Jett Robertson. Then, after an interception by Northern corner Gary Carter, the Lights kicked a field goal and led 10-7 with 13:51 left in the second quarter. But the lead wouldn't last. Eastern scored three touchdowns to take a 28-10 lead into the half, then poured it on with 30 points in the second half.

Wilson had a stellar night in a losing effort for MSU-N, completing 22-of-36 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns, to go along with one interception. He also led the team in rushing, carrying the ball 16 times for 62 yards and a score. For full coverage of the Lights, see Monday's edition of the Havre Daily News.
