Eagles Manor heat restored today

The Eagles Manor is repairing its boiler and will have it running today, Eagles Manor Supervising Site Manager Karen Granger said this morning.

The manor started working on the heat system to replace its pumps more than six weeks ago, she added.

Granger said the work to replace the pumps was extensive, including having to remove asbestos before other work could be done, removing the old pumps and finding, or having built, pumps to replace the defective units.

A new slab also had to be poured to hold the replacement pumps.

She said Nault Plumbing and Heating and Loch Electric started work last night and should be turning the pumps on and restoring the heat today.

"I can't thank Mike Nault enough," Granger added.

A resident of the manor, who asked to not have their name printed, said it has gotten cold in the manor, with the interior of the manor's lobby reaching temperature as low as 56 degrees at one point. The resident said people have been buying space heaters, but it has been hard to keep the rooms warm.

This follows a summer when the air conditioning was not working, with the building reaching high temperatures at some point.

The Havre city government approved a $125,000 loan to Affiliated Developers - which was pursuing purchasing the manor - to use for repairs including the heating and air conditioning, pending completion of the sale. The sale has not yet been completed as far as the Havre Daily News was able to ascertain.

Over the summer and this week, residents who asked not be named have said the situation in the manor has been hard to live in.

Granger said the staff of the manor have been trying to make sure the tenants are as comfortable and safe as possible, both during the cold temperatures during the last week and during the heat of the summer, including going around the buildings and making welfare checks. That included buying fans during the summer and space heaters during the cold snap, she said.

"Everbody on staff has bent over backward to make sure the residents are taken care of," she said.

Ron Harmon, owner of Big Equipment, also bought air conditioners that were installed in the common rooms on the top three floors during the heat of summer.

The manor has been trying for some time to get the heat up for the cold weather, Granger said.

"It took a long time to get those pumps fixed," she said.
