This weekend marked the halfway point in the high school volleyball season on the Hi-Line. And with the calendar turning to October, soon, it will be tournament time.
First though, there's plenty of important matches to be played, and last week started with Box Elder beating Rocky Boy in a rivalry match in Box Elder. The Bears wound up sweeping the Class B Morning Stars in straight sets.
Thursday, there were plenty of District 6C East teams in action as well, and a crucial match took place in Rudyard where North Star took down Chester-Joplin-Inverness in straight sets. The Knights beat the Hawks by scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-20. Olivia King had eight kills and four aces for North Star, while Paij Peterson tallied 11 assists. CJI got six kills each from Khloe Kamerzell and Sam May, while Kamerzell added nine digs.
Chinook was a victor in the 6C East Thursday as the Sugarbeeters topped Big Sandy in four sets. The Beeters won by scores of 27-25, 20-25, 25-16 and 25-9 in a hard-fought match. Kourtney Hanson had a huge match with 19 kills and seven blocks, while Ginger Hauer had 24 assists. Big Sandy got 18 kills from Jaylyn Cline.
Fort Benton fell to Belt Thursday night, while Box Elder beat Geraldine-Highwood by scores of 23-25, 28-26, 25-17, 19-25 and 15-8 in a wild match.
The Bears beat Hays-Lodge Pole Friday night, while North Star took care of Sunburst by scores of 25-10, 25-16 and 25-12. Rocky Boy lost to Shelby by scores of 25-12, 25-10 and 25-19.
Saturday, most area squads took a break from regular season action to play in mid-season tournaments. Included in those was the North Star Showcase in Rudyard. The host Knights beat Big Sandy in the championship match, while CJI beat Dutton-Brady for third place.
