The Montana State University-Northern rodeo teams have to travel a lot during the Big Sky Region fall and spring seasons, but for one weekend, the Lights and Skylights got to stay at home.
Last Friday and Saturday, Northern played host to the 2018 MSU-Northern Rodeo at the Bigger Better Barn, and the rodeo was packed with plenty of excitement.
The entire Big Sky Region was in Havre last weekend, including teams from Montana, Montana State, University of Providence, Miles Community College, UM-Western, Dawson Community College and Northwest College. On the men's side, Northwest College took the team title, while the Montana State Bobcats won the women's team title.
For Northern, the Lights had a strong weekend, thanks in large part to Zane Marcenko, who placed fifth in the All-Around. Marcenko was third in the steer wrestling with a time of 11.8 and fourth in the tie-down robing with a 20.6.
The Lights also got a fifth-place finish from header Clay Doney in the team roping, as Northern placed fifth with 210 points.
The MSU-N women finished sixth in the rodeo, with 7.5 points. Jane Keeley placed eighth in the goat-tying with a time of 14.7.
NWC's Caleb Mitchell won the men's All-Around, while UM-Western's Sierra Lyons won the women's All-Around.
Northern will wrap up its fall schedule with this weekend's UM-Western Rodeo in Dillon. The Big Sky Region slate returns in the spring with rodeos in Bozeman, Miles City, Missoula and the Big Sky Finals in Great Falls.
