Argos spike Skylights in Great Falls

Northern returns home to face rival Carroll College Saturday afternoon

The young Montana State University-Northern volleyball team is trying to jump-start its 2018 Frontier Conference season. But Wednesday night in Great Falls, the University of Providence Argos weren't in the mood to let the Skylights get going.

In a Frontier rivalry match inside the McLaughlin Center, the Argos swept the Skylights by scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-11. The loss dropped Northern to 0-3 in conference play ahead of Saturday's home match against Carroll College.

Coming into the match at UP, Northern head coach Rose Obunaga wanted to see her team be more aggressive at the net, and while the Skylights did tally 23 kills, led by six from Katia Michelotti, UP countered with an impressive 13 blocks. The Argos also had 36 kills and were stout defensively with 47 digs.

Northern also got five kills from Emily Gutierrez as well as five kills and an ace from Jessica Curl. Hannah Amtmann paced the MSU-N defense with 12 digs in the back row.

Now, the Skylights will come back to the Armory Gymnasium for a showdown with the Fighting Saints, and again, things won't be easy. Carroll is led by returning All-Conference hitter Brielle Bumgarner (MH 6-1) and setter Rayna Pilegram (S 6-0), who lead a charged-up offense for Carroll. The Saints are tall and tough defensively, too. Lexi Mikkelsen (OH 6-2) and Aliyah Williams (S 6-1) are tough on the block and Alya Carpenter (OH 5-9) anchors the back row. As always, Carroll has a deep rotation too, and, with Boyle being a veteran head coach, expect Carroll to once again be in the mix down the stretch.

Saturday's match is also a big one for Northern because the Skylights (1-14) won't play at home again until a rematch with the Argos on Oct. 24. The match between Northern and Carroll will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Armory Gymnasium.
