Hi-Line Football Roundup: Beeters, Hawks win Northern C games

There was no shortage of big high school football games this past weekend across the Hi-Line, but the biggest by far took place in Big Sandy Friday as the Pioneers played host to the defending Six-Man state champions.

And for a good chunk of the game, the fourth-ranked Pioneers went toe-to-toe with MonDak, the top-ranked team in Class C Six-Man football. However, a 24-point fourth quarter led the Thunder to a 57-28 win over Big Sandy.

Early on, though, the Pioneers showed no fear of what many consider to be the team to beat in Six-Man. Big Sandy opened the scoring on a 43-yard touchdown pass from Parker Proulx to go ahead 6-0 and later when the two brothers connected again on a 12-yard touchdown pass, it put Big Sandy in front 12-6 after the opening stanza.

After Darian Holecek tossed a touchdown pass, one of five he would eventually throw to tie the game at 12-12, Big Sandy took the lead again, this time on a 14-yard rushing touchdown by sophomore Kade Strutz. The Pioneers led 20-12 at the intermission, Big Sandy led the top-ranked Thunder 20-18.

In the second half, though, Holecek took over. He threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score as MonDak racked up 39 points in the second half and 24 in the fourth quarter to win going away, 57-28. When it was all said and done Holecek threw for 316 yards and also ran for 79 yards and a score. Strutz was the top performer for Big Sandy, rushing for 112 yards. The Thunder outgained the Pioneers 411-226. Big Sandy (2-1) will be back in action Friday at home against Geraldine/Highwood.

CJI 54, Cascade 0

Chester-Joplin-Inverness came into Cascade fresh off a difficult loss to Choteau the week prior and in this meeting, the Hawks were determined to take care of business.

After opening the season with a non-conference game, CJI was 0-1 in the Northern C going into the weekend, thanks to the head-to-head defeat by Choteau. However, last Friday in Cascade, the Hawks started fast and rolled to a 54-0 shutout win. CJI (2-1) will pay a visit to defending Northern C champion Belt Friday in a key game for CJI's playoff hopes.

Choteau 64, HLP 6

The Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds went to Choteau last Friday in search of their first win on the gridiron this season, but despite getting on the scoreboard, the T-Birds were dominated 64-6 by the Bulldogs.

Choteau, a playoff team a season ago, went up and down the field against HLP, scoring early and often against the T-Birds, who allowed an average of 51.5 points coming in. The T-Birds did get their first touchdown of the season and will look to get their first win of the season Saturday at home. The T-Birds (0-3) and Bears (0-2) will square off at 1 p.m.
