A man charged with aggravated assault in 2016 who was convicted after a two-day trial in state District Court in Havre was sentenced to seven years under state supervision.

Curtis W. Stanley was accused of on Oct. 2, 2016, grabbing a woman who, along with another man, was watching football with him. She said he threw her down, kicked her and strangled her until the other man pulled him off. Then he grabbed a pot of boiling water in which they were cooking some meat and threw it on her, causing second-degree burns on her arm and face.

Oct. 16, 2016, Stanley pleaded guilty to that charge and felony charges of partner family member assault and assault with a weapon from an earlier case. The judge ruled that he could not accept the plea because of Stanley’s comments under examination and rescheduled a trial.

The Hill County Attorney’s Office on Dec. 8, 2017, requested the charges be dropped from the earlier case and those charges were dismissed.

Feb. 16, 2018, after a two-day trial, a jury convicted Stanley of the aggravated assault charge.

March 26, Judge Dan Boucher sentenced Stanley to seven years with the state Department of Corrections with all but 398 days suspended and credit for 398 days and ordered him to pay $8,758.46 in restitution.
