Kadyn Acor stands tall for the Ponies
The Havre High volleyball team were off and running last week as the Blue Ponies played host to the rest of the Central and Eastern A teams with the Eastern A Tip-Off being held at the HHS gymnasium.
The Ponies put together a strong effort over the two days and this weekend, Havre will head to Belgrade for a couple of conference matches Friday, before taking part in another preseason tournament Saturday in Livingston as HHS will compete in the Windy City Classic.
While the Ponies have a few new faces on the varsity roster this season, one senior who is back for another season and who is already used to Havre's tournament schedule early on is Kadyn Acor, a middle blocker who is a big part of what the Ponies want to do on both offense and defense.
Acor stands nearly 6-0 and that's one thing that certainly gives her an advantage and gives the Ponies some height inside they haven't always had in recent seasons.
While Acor has worked her way up to the varsity team because of her ability to defend on the block and her hitting, her hard work and leadership will also be essential for a Pony team that has just two seniors.
Acor, a two-sport athlete at Havre High, also plays for the Havre High tennis team, as well as taking part in other extra-curricular activities throughout her time at Havre High. She has played both singles and doubles for the Pony girls tennis team and has also gotten the chance to play doubles with her sister Cassidy Acor.
"It's fun for us to get to play together," Acor said. "We are thinking of maybe playing doubles together next season.
"Kadyn is just an amazing kid," added Blue Pony tennis coach George Ferguson. "She's a tremendous athlete. She's become a really, really good tennis player, and I have gotten to watch her play volleyball a couple of times last year, and I know she's outstanding on that court, too. She and Cassidy both are great athletes, and they're so much fun to coach. But I think even more important is just how great of kids they are. They're a lot of fun to be around. Kadyn has been an absolute joy to coach the last three years, and I'm really looking forward to coaching her during her senior season this spring. She's justa wonderful kid."
The Acor sisters will get to be teammates in the spring but they are also sharing the volleyball court right now. Cassidy is another key player on the block for the Ponies and another one of the team's best hitters. In fact it the Ponies are going to achieve anything of significance this season in volleyball, they will need strong performances from both sisters.
This week is especially important for the Ponies with two conference matches coming Friday against Belgrade and Livingston. But before the Ponies hit the road, the Havre Daily News caught up with Kadyn Acor for five questions.
HDN: So when did you start playing volleyball?
Acor: "About seventh grade. It's just a fun sport. I like hitting the ball and just the team atmosphere."
HDN: What's it been like getting to play sports with your sister?
Acor: "It's been a lot of fun to get to share that with her. I have enjoyed it."
HDN: How is a team sport like volleyball different from tennis?
Acor: "It's kind of nice because you know you have your teammates out there with you and that you don't have to do it all on your own."
HDN: How was your summer, did you do anything exciting?
Acor: "It was good. Mostly played volleyball and tennis."
HDN: What is your goal for this season?
Acor: "I think if we could make it to state, that would be really awesome for us as a team."
