Ponies battle tough field at Prairie Farms

Teagan Fee tops them all at Havre Invitational golf tourney

The Havre High golf team is just getting started. But one of the most important tournaments of their entire season is already under the Blue Ponies' belt now.

On Thursday, Havre hosted the annual Havre Invitational at Prairie Farms Golf Course. And under hot, sunny, but smoky, skies the Blue Ponies made the most their home meet. And it was indeed a great home meet, as the Ponies hosted what is likely one of the biggest Class A tournaments all season long.

In the field at Prairie Farms were not only regulars from Lewistown and Browning, but also Billings Central, Laurel, Sidney, Hardin and both Great Falls High and CMR. So there was no doubt the field was full of good players and plenty of good golf.

And few played better golf than Havre High senior Teagan Fee, who carded a stellar 83 to win the girls tournament. Fee was fresh off a Top 10 finish at the Great Falls Invitational earlier this week. She took that momentum home, and wound up winning in her last Havre Invite.

"Being a senior, it felt really good to play good today," Fee, who is a two-time Class A All-Stater already, said. "I felt like I played pretty good, so to do it on my home course, it feels good."

Fee topped the girls field, but in all Havre had only three players, so the Ponies didn't qualify for a team score. Laurel finished with the best team score on the girls side with a 391, while Sidney was second with a 404. Sophomore Jocelyn Staples finished the day with a 124 for the Ponies, while senior Kinzee Peterson shot a 132.

On the boys side, the field was loaded with good players, none better than Laurel All-Stater Paul O'Neil, who fired a 1-over par 73 to win the tournament. In all, four players broke 80 at Prairie Farms, and that meant, things were tough on a young Blue Pony boys squad.

Junior Tyrel Kjersem paced the Ponies, of head coach Walynn Burgess, with a 94, while sophomore Josh Warp was second at 96. Caleb Chambliss (98), Nolan Lotton (106) and Tavish McLean (119) rounded out the scoring for the Ponies, who finished in fifth place with a 394. Laurel topped the boys tourney with a 320, while Billings Central (330) edged Lewistown (338) for second place.

No matter where the Ponies finished on Thursday, though, it was a great day, with great conditions, and they played on their home course. Fee noted that it was a perfect way to head into the rest of the regular season.

"I'm just going to try and keep improving," Fee said. "I just want to keep getting better."

Havre will be right back at it Saturday when the Ponies head to East Glacier for the Browning Invitational. The Ponies will then travel to Bozeman for the Belgrade Invite Monday.
