At one time Daine Solomon was a premier hitter for the Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team and Sunday, in the state championship game of the Montana fastpitch state tournament, he showed why.
Playing on the Valley Furniture team at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field, Solomon belted a 3-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to break a 5-5 tie between Valley Furniture and Desperado, a team out of Missoula. Desperado had built a 5-0 lead before Valley Furniture scored five runs of its own to tie the game and send it to extra innings. That set the stage for Solomon's heroics. Valley Furniture closed out the game in the bottom half of the inning, wrapping up the team's undefeated run to the state championship.
Valley Furniture also knocked off Desperado in the second round of the tournament, after the team from Havre got a first-round bye. Then, Valley Furniture knocked off Gallery Lounge to clinch a spot in the championship game.
In addition to Solomon, the Valley Furniture team was filled with a bunch of former Northstars players and former Havre High athletes such as Andy Smith, C.J. Evans, Kyle Miller, Ricky Brown, Ryne Antley and Justin Jensen, as well as some others that include John Shennum, Ryan Callahan and Sean Mariani.
