Local Golf Report: Blue Pony golf begins Thursday

Tee to Green

There’s plenty still going on in the local golf scene, but since the calendar has turned to August, it’s not just about the adults anymore.

No, this week, the Havre High golf teams begin practicing under new head coach Waylynn Burgess, while later this month, the Montana State University-Northern golf teams will also get going.

The Blue Ponies will hold their first practice of the new season Friday, and will play their first tournament of the season, the Great Falls Invitational next Monday and Tuesday. Havre will also be home next Thursday for the annual Havre Invitational.

So, I’d like to take this time to wish all of our local high school and college golfers good luck on their upcoming seasons.

While the fall golf season is just about to be begin, the summer is winding down, and so are golf leagues at Prairie Farms Golf Course and Beaver Creek Golf Course.

Last Tuesday at Prairie Farms men’s league, Vic’s earned high-team honors with 21.5 points. Lowell Swenson, Tom Haas, Hoover Peterson and Kerry Ward composed the team. Jeremy Jensen, C.J. Evans, Lunar Evans and Haas showed it was good night for scoring, as they all shot 37 for low gross. Gene Allen was low net with a 28.5.

Last Wednesday night saw Valley Furniture score a whopping 29.5 points. Cal Wirtzberger, Mike Evans, Kerry Ward and Brent Reber made up the team. Jeremy Jensen was again low gross with a 2-under par 34 while Tom Adams was low net with a 30.

In ladies league last Thursday night, Scharfe, Kato & Co. was high team with 24.5 points. Ristina Wilting, Ginger Zanto, Carrie Kato and Maria Borlaug made up the winning team. Tammy Boles fired an outstanding 37 for low gross, while Emi Smith was low net with a 29.5.

This week marks the start of the ladies league playoffs at Prairie Farms. Thursday night, Independence Bank plays Havre Heating & AC, D.A. Davidson takes on Northern Montana Hospital, Double R faces Scharfe, Kato & Co., and Patrick Construction battles Prairie Farms. Congrats to Independence Bank for also winning the regular season championship.

Two big tournaments were also played in the area last Saturday.

At Prairie Farms, the annual Northern Montana Healthcare Foundation Invitational Tournament was held. The 18-hole, 4-person scramble was won by Phillips County Hospital. The team was composed of Ward VanWichen, Keenan VanWichen, Jeff Howard and Kayla Howard. Second place went to Benefis, which was made up of Terry Olinger, Bill Carmichael, Gunnar Vandermars and Natalie Moen.
