State men's fastpitch comes back to Havre

As Havre sports fans wait for the fall sports season, which is right around the corner, they can satisfy their need for athletic competition this weekend at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field, with Havre hosting the Montana Men's Fastpitch state tournament.

The state tournament will feature a total of six teams, including two from Havre. Three of the four others team in attendance will be from Missoula, with another team coming to compete from Plentywood. The first pitch will go out Saturday morning at 8 a.m., when Hustle N of Missoula will take on Plentywood. The other first-round game will feature Desperado and Silver Dollar, both teams from Missoula.

The two teams from Havre, Gallery Lounge and Valley Furniture will get a bye. Gallery Lounge will play at noon, Saturday against Plentywood or Hustle N. Valley Furniture will play right after at 2 p.m., Saturday, facing the winner of Desperado and the Silver Dollar.

The Gallery Lounge team will feature of a number of local softball regulars, as well as some former Havre Northstars.

Some of the former legion baseball players include Patch Wirtzberger, the Northstar's assistant coach this past season and one-time interim manager, Dan Wirtzberger, a former player and head coach of the Northstars, as well as Jake Sedahl and Kennedy McKay, two of the most recent Northstar players. The rest of the team consists of current Havre High softball head coach Tony Vigliotti, local softball legend Gary Evans, Cal Wirtzberger, Bucky Lindstrand, Jake Meierhoff and Nate Baltrush.

Former Havre High and Montana State-University-Northern standout Andy Smith will help lead Valley Furniture, another team filled with former Northstars, into action. Valley Furniture will also feature Daine Solomon, along with Billy Evans, Sean Mariani, Justin Jensen, Ryan Callahan, Ricky Brown, Ryne Antley, C.J. Evans, Kyle Miller and John Shennum.

The state fastpitch tournament is also a true double-elimination tournament. The first championship game is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. But if the one-loss team beats the team that makes the championship undefeated, a second, if-necessary game would be played at 4 p.m. All games will be played at Sixth Avenue Memorial Field.
