The Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team got off to a blistering start in their Northern A District Tournament opener Thursday in Conrad against Lethbridge.
Unfortunately, a fast start wasn’t enough to get a victory, as the Miners rallied for the 9-5 win.
The key point in the game came in the fifth inning. In the top half of the fifth, the Northstars tied the game at 5-5, when Austin Delarosa walked and eventually scored on an error. However, the score wouldn’t stay tied for long, as Lethbridge scored to break the tie and then added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to wrap up the 9-5 win. Havre is now one loss away from elimination, the Northstars will play the Great Falls Chargers Friday morning to keep their season alive.
The Northstars got off to a roaring start in the first two innings, as Delarosa ripped an RBI single up the middle to score Ethan Roberts, giving Havre a 1-0 in the top of the first. Then, in the bottom of the second, after Brenden Danielson drew a walk and Roberts singled, Jake Sedahl belted a two-run triple, giving the Northstars a 3-0 advantage.
Lethbridge added two runs of its own in the bottom of the second, then scored two more in the bottom of the third to grab a 4-3 lead and chase Havre starting pitcher Brendan Garden, who was hit with the loss after allowing four runs on three hits and walking five in two innings pitched.
Roberts added an RBI in the top of the fourth for Havre, which tied the game again at 4-4, but the Northstars never led again and went down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, needing four runs to extend the game.
In all, Havre managed five runs on nine hits, yet the Northstars made five costly errors. Lethbridge managed nine runs, despite getting one less hit than the Northstars. The Miners also limited themselves to just three errors in the win.
In addition to an RBI and two runs scored, Roberts also went 4-for-4 at the plate, leading the way for Havre offensively. Danielson, Sedahl, Delarosa, Kennedy McKay and Eli Cloninger all added one hit each in the loss.
The loss dropped the Northstars record to 20-23-1 on the season. Havre is also in the loser’s bracket at the district tournament, meaning it would need to win out and reach the championship game to make the State A Legion tournament.
Havre will play the Great Falls Chargers A today to keep its season alive. The district tournament continues through Sunday.
