Outdoors: Coal Mine Coulee is the perfect place for Moto XC

The outdoors around the Havre area, especially in places like the Bear Paw Mountains and Missouri River Breaks, has a lot to offer in the way of fun and recreational sports. And that certainly includes those who love to ride dirt bikes on some pretty awesome terrain.

And the kind of terrain people of all ages who love to race motocross cross country style can certainly be found at Coal Mine Coulee just outside of Big Sandy where the 2018 Coal Mine Coulee XC event was held last Saturday.

The event, held 6.5 miles outside Big Sandy, was part of the 406XC Series. The A Race was a 20-mile run over what event planners described as a race through large sandstone formations, narrow rocky ravines, creek bottoms and rolling hills, and without a flat spot on the course.

That type of land turned out to be perfect for bike enthusiasts, too, and men, women and children of all ages came to compete in several different races throughout the day. Many contestants and families also camped on site, making a special weekend out of the races.

The A Race featured 51 contestants alone, and was won by Raine Poole.

Other winners on the day included Patrick Saunders (Race 1-50's), Ty Parsons (A 250), Trever Pankratz (A Veteran), Dale Davis (A Senior), Collin Holman (B Open), Jake Reinert (B Open), David Vig (B Veteran), Nate Neergaard (B Senior), Randy Gravatt (B Super Senior), (Ryan Alley (School Boy), Seth Ketola (C Open), Caysea Lerwill (C Women), Gus Adams (Super Mini), Rhune Lee (85cc Senior), Patrick Fouhy (65cc), Patrick Saunders (50cc) and Halle Marks (Girls).
