Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Trigg Mapes, Youth Baseball

Baseball is a big deal in the life of young Trigg Mapes

Playing baseball all summer long can be a big commitment, however, it's one that Trigg Mapes relishes as part of the Havre 12U All-Star team.

For Mapes, baseball has long been a source of passion. He started playing the sport when he got his first opportunity in Tee ball and he hasn't looked back since.

After a slew of tournaments across the state, Havre hosted the Montana 12U East State Tournament last weekend. Havre lost only once in four games but was eliminated by Glendive in the single-elimination part of the tournament.

Even though Havre didn't finish in the top three, there is still something to be said for winning three of four games, and Mapes was a big part of that, both on the mound and at the plate. He put together a couple of strong outings in the state tournament and was also one of the 12U teams' top hitters throughout the weekend. Of course, that is nothing new as Mapes has been a consistent force in the lineup with six home runs during his time with the 12U All Stars.

While Mapes does a good job on the mound, he said his favorite position is shortstop. But, he did lead Havre in strikeouts this past weekend and will hope to continue his high level of play this weekend at the Choteau 12U All-Star Tournament, which gets underway Friday.

Although Mapes has invested much of his time in the summer playing baseball, he is a multi-sport athlete who will be in the eighth grade next year at Havre Middle School, where he played football and basketball last year.

The Havre 12U All-Star team is coached by Jake Eldridge and joining Mapes on the roster is Tanner Delarosa, Aden Habeger, Matt Huse, Jevin Jenkins, Brayden Kimberling, Bodhy Lassle, Chason Mader, Brody Nanini, Ezra Pyle, Terek Shipp and Colter Solomon.

The 12U All Stars will continue their summer of baseball this weekend in Choteau, but before making the trip, the Havre Daily News caught up with Mapes for five questions.

HDN: What has been the best part about playing All-Star baseball?

Mapes: "I just like playing baseball and playing out in the field."

HDN: What is your favorite position to play

Mapes: "Probably shortstop. That's where I usually play when I don't pitch."

HDN: What do you like about baseball?

Mapes: "I just think it's a really fun sport to play."

HDN: What did you like about having the state tournament here?

Mapes: "It was cool. We had a lot of people cheering us on, and it was nice to stay in our own beds and not have to travel."

HDN: Outside of baseball, what are some of your hobbies?

Mapes: "I like to go hunting and fishing. I haven't been able to do much fishing this summer because baseball takes up a lot of time, but that's ok. I love playing."
