Committee appointments finalized by school board

The first Havre Public Schools Board of Trustees meeting of the summer finalized the committee appointments, and other items of new business were approved.

The first item of new business was finishing the trustee committee appointments for 2018-19.

“We pretty much have those filled,” Superintendent Andy Carlson said, adding that the only committees that still need members assigned are the Student Learning Options Committee and the K-12 Schoolwide Title 1 Committee.

The Student Learning Options includes working on personalized learning plans, and the Title 1 will be working through the accreditation process at Havre Middle School and Havre High School.

Member Curtis Smeby and Chair Aileen Couch volunteered to be on the Student Learning Options committee, while Vice Chair Harvey Capellen, who was absent, was also placed on the committee.

Member Cindy Erickson volunteered to be on the K-12 Schoolwide Title 1 Committee, and the board unanimously passed the appointments.

The 2018-19 District Educational Work Plan was also presented to the board. The plan includes items such as curriculum reviews and a check of the ventilation system in the science rooms, Carlson said.

The district would also like to send surveys to all stakeholders — parents, staff and faculty — to get more information for future work, he added.

The district plans to use an already-made survey, Carlson said, and “we would make sure people would be aware it will be out there.”

The board unanimously passed the work plan and heard the consideration of Havre High School fall activity schedule.

“There is nothing out of the ordinary,” Carlson said about the schedule, which included football, volleyball, cross country and golf, before it was unanimously approved.

Carlson presented changes in the personnel practices for building administrators, adding that he recommended the approval of the board.

In response to a question asked by Couch on whether major changes had to be made, Carlson said there were just small changes to administrator contracts for the next two years.

“There were some wording changes,” Carlson said, adding that they are older documents and they just needed some clarification.

The board passed the proposal unanimously.

Carlson told the board that he is working on the Opening Day Ceremony, and he would like to recognize people who have worked for the district for 20 or more years.

The district also still has openings, including for a special education teacher, an elementary counseling position and a high school history teaching position, Assistant Superintendent Craig Mueller said.
