Local Golf Report:

From Tee to Green

There’s a lot of great golf tournaments in the Havre area. Many of them are for worthy causes, and they’re all a whole lot of fun. But very few golf tournaments give players the chance to compete in a way like the pros do every week, but at the same time still offer the competition in a team format.

One such tournament that does, however, is the annual Rotary Blast, and the 2018 edition was held at Prairie Farms Golf Course Sunday. The Rotary Blast is a two-person, modified stableford scoring system, where players play their own ball and are awarded points for double-bogeys through eagles or better. So, in other the words, the more points you accrue, the better your score is. The tournament is also handicapped, so players start out having to make up a certain amount of points to get to zero, and the event is flighted as well.

In this year’s Rotary Blast, the duo of Brian and Terri Lilletvedt were the overall Calcutta winners with an incredible score of +19. Congrats guys, job well done.

The Lilletvedt’s also won their flight, while other flight winners included, C.J. Evans and Lunar Evans (1st Flight), Doug Sheppard and Dave Sheppard (2nd Flight) and Chad Edgar and Eric Wilting (3rd Flight).

Congrats to everybody who played in the Rotary Blast as well, because it’s a tough, tough day. A couple of thank-yous as well, including to the Rotary Club, Jim Kato, Doug Sheppard, Paula Sheppard, Carrie Kato, Dave and Judy Greenwood, and the grounds crew at Prairie Farms. Oh, and thanks to my partner, Kyle Miller for playing with me. I know we didn’t exactly scrape this year, but as the tournament name says, I had a blast. I’d also like to add that is was really good to see some of the next generation of adult golfers in Havre playing in the tourney. Guys like Jeff Miller, Trey Hanson and Trey Brown to name a few. As we get older and older, it’s you guys who will keep adult golf going around these parts, so thanks for playing.

I’d also like to this time to congratulate Teagan Fee, who finished first in her flight a couple of weeks ago at the Optimist Junior Tournament in Great Falls. Teagan will be a senior at Havre High this fall, and is already a two-time Class A All-State performer in golf and, it just so happens, she’s one heck of a tennis player, too. Good job, Teagan.

Men’s league took a break last week at Prairie Farms for the Fourth of July holiday, but the ladies were in action Thursday night. There was a tie for high team between Double R and D.A. Davidson, each with 21.5 points. Double R was composed of Ali Ward, Tammy Boles, Debbie Ritz and Connie Peterson, while D.A. was made up of Mel Zuidema, Patsy Divish, Shari Baltrusch and Paula Sheppard. Tammy Boles shot an outstanding 37 for low gross, and Erin McLain was low net with a 31.

Men’s league at Beaver Creek Golf Course continued last Thursday night as well. High team went to Gram’s with 27 points. The squad was made up of Chris Owens, Kellan Malone, Ryan Callahan and Billy Evans. Owens and Malone shared low gross, each shooting 39, while Shane Rice was low net with a 30.

There’s a big tournament on the horizon at BCGC, too. The annual MSU-Northern Diesel Technology tourney will be held July 21. For more information on the scramble, call the Pro Shop at BGCG.

And in one more interesting piece of tournament news, I have to give a big shout out to my buddy Gary Wagner for winning his flight at the annual Whitefish Fourth of July tourney. A lot of Havre guys play in that tourney, which is one of the biggest and toughest in all of Montana Amateur golf, and Gary put up some great scores. Great job Gary — first marriage and now a win in Whitefish. Needless to say, you’re having a great couple of weeks my friend.
