Local Golf Report: Thank you Rotary Golf Camp

From Tee to Green

I would be remiss if I didn't start this week's From Tee to Green without a couple of important congratulations.

First, hats off to Kyle Sheppard, who carded his first career hole-in-one Sunday at Prairie Farms Golf Course. Kyle aced the par-3 13th hole from 174 yards out with a 7-iron. The shot was witnessed by Mark Kato, Barry Kato and Mike Sherrill. Not only was this Kyle's first ace, but, he also got a lemonade and a dozen balls from Dr. Kevin Harada in the process. Way to go Shep.

I also want to say congrats to Jimmy Kato, Doug Sheppard, and everyone else who helped put on the Rotary Youth Golf Camp last week at Prairie Farms. As an avid golfer, and a coach of a sport (tennis) that's not considered one of the major sports in today's society, I truly appreciate what all you guys do with the Rotary Camp. I believe it's an extremely important event, one that not only provides something fun for kids of all ages, but also, an event that helps grow the game of golf in Havre at the youth level. And I hope one day, I see many of the youths that attended camp last week, playing golf for the Havre Blue Ponies. Well done, guys.

Speaking of the Rotary, it's another big week as the annual Rotary Blast comes to Prairie Farms. The 18-hole modified stableford scoring tourney is a two-person format where points are counted up, with eagles or better worth six points, birdies worth three, pars two, bogeys one and double-bogeys are worth half a point. The format is similar to the one used at the PGA Tour's Barracuda Championship.

As someone who has played in this tourney for many, many years now, I can honestly say it's a fun format, very challenging and, if you play well, it can be pretty rewarding. There is still time to sign up for the tourney, which will be held Sunday. Call the Pro Shop for more information.

In league action last week at Prairie Farms Patrick Construction earned high-team honors Tuesday night with 23.5 points, kicking off the second half of men's league. The team was composed of Dave Peterson, Tim Callahan, Dave Armstrong and Brett Patrick. Jeremy Jensen shot 2-under 34 for low gross, while Gene Harada and Justin Kallenberger tied for low net at 23.5.

Jensen continued his fine play by shooting another 34 for low gross last Wednesday. Wayne Bolken and Mike Erickson shared low net with a 30.5. High team went to Hub Insurance with 22.5 points. The team was made up of Scott Leeds, Eric Wilting, Murray Hurlburt and Chad Edgar.

In ladies league last Thursday night, high team went to Patrick Construction with 24.5 points. Katie Heath, Sue Armstrong, Carolyn Patrick, and HDN publisher Stacy Mantle composed the squad. Sarah Spangler shot an outstanding 3-under 33 for low gross, while Nancy Salapich was low net with a 28.5.

At Beaver Creek Golf Course last Thursday, Kyle Miller, who just so happens to be my Rotary Blast partner, fired a 2-under 34 for low-gross honors. No other scores or standings were reported from the night.
