Friday at noon, the Hill County 4-H Chirping Meadowlarks will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their Little Free Library, or LFL, at Gary & Leo’s Fresh Foods.
“(The) club decided to make a Little Free Library … to help provide opportunities for individuals to participate in an event — getting a book — that is sometimes difficult to do in a rural community,” 4-H parent and volunteer Jessica Myers said. “The mission of LFL is to ‘promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations.’”
Donations of all types of books will be accepted at the ceremony, and cookies and punch will follow.
The wooden box at Gary & Leo’s will serve as the Havre area point for the book exchange.
The Chirping Meadowlarks started the project last year, Myers said, adding that the group received some funding from the Montana 4-H Foundation to help with costs such as registering books in the program and getting bookmarks.
The Montana 4-H Foundation is a group that supports 4-H youth by helping raise funds for educational opportunities for youths, volunteers and staff of the 4-H organization.
The club will also be putting an LFL in Rudyard this fall, Myers said. Their ultimate goal is to add two more a year until the area between Havre and Chester is covered.
