In its first year of existence, the Havre Junior Comets 14U baseball team hosted the state tournament in the 14U division of the Montana Baseball League. And after winning all three games in the tournament, which ran Friday through Sunday at Legion Field, the Junior Comets are the 14U state champions.
Havre opened the tournament, which featured three teams, by taking on the Montana Legends Friday night. The Junior Comets won that game 7-5 and knocked off the same team Sunday at Legion Field by the score of 8-2 in the championship game. Havre also defeated the Miles City Outlaws Saturday morning 11-5 to clinch a berth in the final game.
In the opening game of the tournament, the Junior Comets scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, then added two more in the bottom of the third and fifth innings. Tavish McLean did a solid job on the mound in nearly three innings of work to help get the win. Drake Berreth had two hits of the Junior Comets seven hits. Havre was also helped by five Legends' errors.
Saturday, Havre took on Miles City and used an eight-run third inning to cruise to an 11-5 victory. The Junior Comets registered eight hits in the victory, with two each from Caden Jenkins and Brenden Fetter. Jenkins also added two RBIs in the win, a total matched by Trenton Maloughney and Kale VanCampen. Lane Kinsella and Kale Reno each threw a pair of solid innings on the mound, helping limit Miles City to just five hits.
After winning both of its games in group play, the Junior Comets finished off their perfect 3-0 weekend with an 8-2 in over the Montana Legends in the championship game. Both teams scored a run in the second inning, but Havre added three in the bottom of the fourth, another in the fifth and three more in the sixth, building an 8-1 lead. The Legends added one run in the top of the seventh, but didn't score any more after notching just three hits all game.
Maloughney got the win after holding the Legends to one run in six innings of work. He also notched six strikeouts. Jenkins put in an inning of work and helped limit the Legends to three hits in seven innings. Jenkins also got two of his three outs by strikeout. Maloughney was stellar on the mound, yet he helped himself at the plate, too, getting two hits and three RBIs. Jenkins also had two hits and two RBI's, while Sosaia Raass also managed two hits.
The rest of the roster for Havre includes Logan Cloninger, Adam Habeger, Carter Leeds, Trigg Mapes, Conner McKay, Brody Nanini, Theron Peterson and Caleb Spangler.
Babe Ruth action continues this week at Legion Field.
