Lights land standout transfer from Detroit

The 2018-19 Montana State University-Northern men's basketball season is still off in the distant future somewhere, but Northern head coach Shawn Huse is making sure that future will be bright.

Tuesday, Huse announced the signing of junior-college transfer Kavon Bey to an NAIA national letter of intent. Bey becomes the sixth addition to the 2018 Lights recruiting class.

Bey is coming to Northern from Macomb Community College in Detroit. He is a 6-5 forward who earned Third-Team All-Conference honors in the Michigan CC Athletic Association last season. Bey averaged 18 points and nine rebounds per game for Macomb, which was second and first, respectively on his team. He also shot 60 percent from the field and an incredible 56 percent from the 3-point-line, which means he's an outstanding inside-out threat.

"Kavon is a very talented player on a very well-coached team at Macomb," Huse said. "He has a knack for scoring the ball at every level on the court. His ability to make plays at a high level really adds a punch for our team moving forward. Kavon is a focused guy that puts the time in and keeps getting better every day. He has only been playing basketball since his junior year of high school, and continues to improve each year. We are very excited he chose to join us, and look forward to what he does for the Lights."

Earlier in the spring, Huse also announced the signing of 6-6 Reedpoint-Rapelje standout Trevor Herzog.

A two-time Class B All-State standout for the Renegades, Herzog averaged 20 points and six rebounds per game this past winter.

"We are thrilled Trevor and his family chose the Lights and MSU-Northern," Huse said. "I feel he will be a great fit here and am excited about his potential. With his size, shooting, and work ethic, he has a chance to vie for significant minutes down the road after developing and working within our program. Most importantly, he is another great teammate that will enhance everything we do with how he takes care of his business both on and off of the floor."

Bey and Herzog, along with earlier signees T.J. Reynolds, Mascio McCadney, Joe Fons and Cedric Curtchfield compose the Lights recruiting class heading into the summer.
