Local Golf Report: Aces, NALSF winners and Father's Day

From Tee to Green

There’s a lot going on in the world of golf these days — both locally and globally. Included in that is the fact that it’s once again U.S. Open week, and in recent years, this week has always held a special meaning for me.

It was just three short years ago that I got all-access to the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, and that week was one of the most enjoyable I’ve ever had in this business, and on the golf course.

But there’s another special day that comes into play each and every U.S. Open week — Father’s Day. The U.S. Open concludes on Father’s Day Sunday every year, and I’m sure this one will be an exciting one at famed Shinnecock Hills.

So, with that day looming, I would like to take this opportunity to wish my father-in-law, Dick Slonaker, a Happy Father’s Day. Golf isn’t his favorite sport, but when I’m watching the final round of the U.S. Open every year since I got married to my amazing wife, Amy, he is definitely on my mind. So Happy Father’s Day dad. And the same to all you golfing fathers out there. Enjoy your day, on or off the course.

On the course, last week was a busy one in our area — especially at Prairie Farms Golf Course, where the annual NALSF Tournament was held Saturday. The tournament was played in 90-degree heat and a cotton storm, but I can speak from experience, it was a fun and competitive scramble.

Congrats to Tom Baker III, Shawn Huse, Chris Mouat and Andrew Rolin for taking first place in the tourney as well. The team was sponsored by Baker/Bud Light. Scharfe, Kato & Co. was second, with Jimmy Kato and Carrie Kato and Greg and Shari Baltrusch making up the team. Third place went to the squad yours truly played on, Havre Ford. My boys included Steve Steinmetz, Matt Wertheimer and Dax Nebel.

Next up on the tourney slate at Prairie Farms is this Saturday’s Natalie Patrick Foundation Scramble.

In league play last week at Prairie, Tire Rama earned high-team honors Tuesday night with 22 points. Jeff and Jeremy Jensen and C.J. Lunar Evans composed the team. Jeremy was also low gross with a 35, while Jeff was low net with a 32. Wednesday night, Harvest Moon Lanes was high team with 22.5 points. Jon Wendland, Cliff Springer, Byron Frey and Bobby Bergren made up the squad. Jeff Jensen and Kyle Sheppard shared low gross with 37s, while Doug Sheppard, on what was a big week for him, was low net with a 30.5. Oh by the way, thanks for demolishing me 8-1, too, Doug!

Last Thursday’s men’s league action at Beaver Creek Golf Course saw New Concept Lawn earn high-team honors. The team was composed of Justin Hawley, Nick Turner, Shane Patascil and Bob Bergren Jr. Kyle Miller and C.J. Evans shared low gross, each shooting 1-under par, while Rob Pitkanen was low net with a 27.

Ladies league at Prairie Farms was rained out last Thursday.

Back to Doug Sheppard for a minute — he was one of two local golfers to record aces last week, both at Prairie Farms. Sheppard aced the par-4 4th hole with a 6-iron from 155 yards out. The shot was witnessed by Anna Toner, Jimmy Kato, Mark Kato, Tom Adams and Jim Wirt. It was his second career hole-in-one. Toner also witnessed an ace by Justin French recently at Prairie Farms. He, too, aced No. 4 from 155 yards out. It was his first hole-in-one. Congrats guys.
