Turner duo leads Hi-Line tracksters

GREAT FALLS - Eddie Harmon is used to winning. He's also used to throwing up, especially when he runs as hard as as he did en route to winning the Class C state championship in the 800-meter run Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Great Falls.

Following an incredible 400-meter stretch that saw him overtake three competitors, Harmon of Turner won the 800, with a time of 1:57, shaving nearly five seconds off his previous best in the event. After his win, Harmon knelt over and threw up.

"I throw up all the time when I run," Harmon said after winning his state championship. "It just happens, especially when I push myself really hard."

With three runners in front of him heading into the final lap, Harmon had no choice but to run as hard as he could and by the time it was over, he finished a good 10-20 meters ahead of the field. And not even his own vomit, could wash away the taste of winning.

"I just felt like I had a little bit left in me," Harmon said. "So I just went for it. Crossing that finish line felt great. Better than last year in all honesty."

Last season, after Harmon won the 800-meter run, claiming the first individual state title in the history of the Turner Tornadoes, the town threw him a parade. But after winning the 400-meter dash Friday and the 800 Saturday, something a little bit bigger might be in order, particularly after teammate Cody Welsh joined Harmon on a state champion later Saturday afternoon.

"It means a whole lot standing out to our school and our community that much," Welsh said following his victory in the 300 hurdles. "It's really competitive here at state. There are so many other good athletes."

Welsh took the stage shortly after Harmon won his state title and like his teammate, he reached the halfway point in the 300 hurdles trailing multiple hurdlers. Yet, just like his teammate, Welsh was able to close the gap and take the lead, before collapsing after the finish line, as a state champion thanks to a time of 40.87.

"It was a hard race, I gave it everything I had," Welsh said. "There were two guys in front of me and I knew if I didn't leave it all on the track, I wasn't going to come away with it but I ended up coming out on top at the end."

Harmon finished his career with three state titles after winning the 800 a season ago and the 400 Friday in Great Falls with a time of 50.31. Harmon also finished third in the 200, which helped Turner finish fourth in the team standings. The Tornadoes were in line to get a trophy until the final race, when Seeley-Swan won the state title in the 1,600 meter run to edge out the Tornadoes for third place 44-40. Harmon finished the meet with 26 points. Welsh also added 14, following a fourth place in the 110 hurdles also Saturday.

Ennis won the Class C boys title with 59 points, while Scobey was second with 57. North Star also added 10 points to finish 15th, while Chester-Joplin-Inverness scored four, thanks to a fourth-place finish in the discus (133-08). Dylan Miller of North Star also capped his career in strong fashion, finishing fourth in the 200 (23.29) and aso fifth in the 400 (51.21). His brother Devon Miller also added to the Knights point total, getting fourth in the javelin (167-08).

On the girls side of things, the big surprise was the fact that the Fort Benton girls failed in their quest to repeat as Class C state champions, falling 3.5 points short of another state title. The championship went to Manhattan Christian, which scored 58. The Longhorns scored 54.5. Twin Bridges finished third with 48. Chinook earned 10 points and finished in 17th.

Fort Benton did win a pair of state championships, as both of the Longhorns relay teams won state titles. The 400-meter relay team consisted of Maddy Thompson, Abby Clark, Leah Gannon and Nicole Axtman. They combined to run a 50.21 to win. Then in the 1,600, Allie Wallace, McKenzie Clark, Gannon and Aspen Giese ran a 4:08.59 to win the long relay, even though it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit in team points.

Gannon had another stellar state meet, finishing third in the 800. McKenzie Clark finished fourth and Giese was also sixth in the same race. Gannon also finished fifth in the 400 meters and fifth in the long jump. Abby Clark also racked up points for Fort Benton, finishing fifth in the 100 hurdles, third in the 300 hurdles and sixth in the high jump. McKenzie Clark also added a fifth in the pole vault, while Thompson was third in the long jump and Axtman was fourth in the triple jump.

Chinook also reached double figures in points thanks to a third-place finish in the 200 for Megan Molyneux, who also got sixth in the 100. Raynee Hasler also added points, getting fifth in the 3,200 for the Beeters, while the 400-meter relay team of Molyneaux, Kourtney Hanson, Lincy Johnson and Jaye Anderson also finished sixth.
